I slipped into the house, it was 10 pm and my main goal was to make it to my room before Daniel could see me. The house was dark and I just barely made it into my room without running into anything. I reached into Jace’s jacket’s pocket to get my phone out, and a slip of paper fell to my floor.

The world is so broken and sometimes it can leave you cold,

And sometimes you can’t feel the fire that guides you home.

The demons will haunt you and steal what you love,

But I’ll be there every step of the way, and hold you up.

-Jace (Don’t forget to smile your true smile) xoxo

My heart warmed up immediately, a stupid smile on stuck on my face. I unlocked my phone and texted him a thank you text before calling Marissa up.

“Hey, you’re alive!?” I joked, sitting on my bed.

“I was going to ask you the same thing! Jace Winters girlfriend!? Girl I’d be dead in seconds!” Marissa gawked.

“Oh Marissa, he is a wonderful boy! I don’t think I’d be able to make it through all this without him.” I said, rereading the note over and over.

“That’s so sweet!” She sighed, “I’ll be back Monday, and I’m looking forward to seeing you girls.”

“We girls miss you!”

“What about a sleepover tomorrow night?”

“I don’t think I’d be a fantastic party candidate…”

“Oh shit sorry, let me know when you’re up for it!”

“I will! I gotta go, great hearing from you!” I hung up the phone and it immediately vibrated because of Jace’s reply.

Anything for the best :)

We texted back and forth for hours until I fell asleep, still in the clothes I’d worn the whole day.

“Riley, wake up.” Sam shook me awake. My eyes fluttered open, my white room was full of sun and it immediately burned my eyes. “It’s two thirty…”

“Why be awake in this horrible place?” I asked, rolling over on my stomach.

“Sleeping doesn’t solve everything. Come on Riley, could you drive me back to the house?”

“Why?” I groaned, I did not want to go back there.

“I just need to go there, sit on the couch once again, go into mum’s room and smell her beautiful perfume.”

“Give me thirty minutes to get ready.” I sat up, Sam smiled in return leaving me to get dressed.

I slipped on a pair of mint green jeans and a light blue knit sweater. My hair was more wavy than usual because of the bun it was kept in, and I decided it looked decent enough to go out into public. I put on only a slight bit of makeup consisting of only mascara and sparkly eye shadow. I felt a little stronger being dressed up, I felt a little more put together. Before leaving my room I grabbed Jace’s black jacket, and slipped it on. Sam and I notified Lacey we were leaving; she smiled a weak grin letting us go. I haven’t seen Daniel for the past two days, and I wasn’t anything but grateful.

I glanced out the window before leaving the house, it looked absolutely beautiful out. The sun shone bright and some grass peaked through the snow on the ground. I opened the door; a gust of wind welcomed me to the wonderful world of winter. It was absolutely freezing. My sister and I scrambled to the car; thank god I got Sam to start the car earlier so it wouldn’t be frozen. I searched for my sunglasses and slipped them on; from inside a warm car it looked so nice out. I longed for the warm summer days.
