PRESENT
"Sandy Cooper." Luke stared at me, wide-eyed.
"Luke Young." I replied, shocked on seeing him in New York. A month after our breakup, I heard from his fellow jocks that Luke had moved to Boston and had already secured everything he needed-including a girlfriend. I was so obsessed with him that I stalked him on Facebook and Twitter. I was angry and shocked to see him moving on with life as if our relationship was non-existent.He removed all my pictures and went to the extent of cutting all his ties with me.
"Sandy! It is truly a surprise meeting you here. Did you move out of Seattle?"He flashed his signature smile at me.
I looked in his chocolate brown eyes. There was a time when that look in his eyes would have turned me into mush. Well, not anymore.
"Yeah, moved in today.Mom got a transfer out here."
"Oh yeah..Your mom works in publishing, right?"
I was surprised that he still remembered my name, let alone my mom's profession.
"Right. However, she plans to resign as soon as her first novel gets published."
"Oh wow! That's great." He grinned, displaying his extra-white teeth .
We stood there in awkward silence for another minute. I was staring at my toes while he was blatantly checking me out.
Geez , subtle much?
"So.." he broke the silence, "Where are you going for the senior year?"
"Stonewall High."
"Really? I go there too!" He looked genuinely excited at the prospect.
I'm not.
When Luke left me, I was completely heartbroken and helpless. It took me weeks to realize that he had planned this all along. At that moment, I concluded that teenage relationships are unhealthy and I will refrain from getting into one.
"Oh." That was all I could respond.
"Alright then..." He kicked a pebble out of the way,"I'll meet you in school, right?"
"Yeah, right." I mumble, avoiding eye contact.
"OK. See you around."
TWO DAYS LATER
I am standing at the end of a long, long road waiting for him to come. It rained heavily last night, but that didn't stop me from meeting him. As a result, my ivory skirt was stained with several patches of mud. Mother might get angry, but I don't care. All I want right now is him. Only him. As I squinted my eyes in the mist, I saw a shadow coming towards me. Joy filled my entire being as I ran towards him. He recognized me and started running too. I was about to yell out his name when I spotted another shadow behind him. The person had a gun and he was aiming at...
"Sandy!! wake up!! It's just a dream!"
I was woken up by Ellen who was hovering on me with a panicked look on her face.
"Sis, sometimes I worry about you." she said, handing me a cup of tea. I rolled my eyes in response. Suddenly, something popped into my mind.
"Hey..was I sleep-talking?"
