Emma Swan has been at the same school for all of high school so far. It was shocking to her because usually she gets moved from home to home, never being at one for long. Right now she is in a foster home with this really lovey-dovey couple, Mary Margaret and David Nolan. She would try and hate them but honestly they are too nice to hate. If she told them to fuck off they would probably ask when or tell her they were proud of her. She couldn't really complain though, they feed her more than three meals a day, it's ridiculous. They buy her new clothes as well as things that are unnecessary like a phone and a laptop. She has never had so many new things in her entire life, it kind of freaked her out.
The blonde wasn't the kind of person to make friends easily, she mostly comes off as rude or scary to most people. So when Ruby, her now best friend, introduced herself on her first day at Storybrooke High and pretty much forced the friendship, she was confused. The brunette is very loud and very popular, not in the mean way though, she just knows everyone. It also helps that it's a very small town, still knowing all the kids is pretty intense. Ruby is the kind of girl that if she saw someone being bullied she wouldn't hesitate to stand up for that someone. She's also the kind of girl that throws a party every weekend in a new place so that the sheriff/ my foster dad, doesn't bust them. Ruby is the reason she has gotten comfortable in this town, in this school where most kids hate going. Emma now loves it, she has her group of friends: Ruby, Elsa, Killian, Graham, Mulan, Ashley, Belle, and Tink. She has never had that many friends in a school before, and she really truly likes them.
She's really good at school work, her brain has always been good at absorbing information. It doesn't come as a surprise that she aces all her classes each semester. The one thing that she's always sucked at is attendance. Usually it wasn't her fault, she was either late because her foster parents wouldn't drive her, because she was sore from getting beaten and didn't want to attract attention so she would skip, because she just really hated the people at school. Now though, in this town, she doesn't have any of those excuses. She always has a ride, either one of her friends or her foster parents can take her. She doesn't get hit anymore, or at least not in this foster home. She loves the people in her school and all her classes, but yet she is still always late for her class right after lunch. Emma is pretty sure that the reason she is always late is because her whole group has the same lunch and she never wants to leave, plus her class is on the opposite side of the school from the lunch room. Her and Ruby have to book it to even make it closely on time. Never does she actually make it into the room before the bell rings, sometimes its in the middle of lessons which is always awkward. Her favorite part about being late is Regina Mills, the valedictorian of their grade, she always has the answer while looking incredibly perfect and in charge. The reason why Emma sees Regina about the best reason of being late is because Regina sits up in the front row and always has questions so she raises her hand a lot. There is a 99% chance that when Emma enters the classroom, Regina will be about to ask a question.
It all started when Emma really had to pee so after lunch she went to the bathroom, not really caring if she was late. When she came back to the classroom Regina had put her hand up right when the blonde had gotten in touching distance, by reflex Emma high fived her and continued walking. The whole class thought it was hilarious, even the teacher. Okay well everyone but one person thought it was funny, Regina Mills did not find it amusing, shocking maybe but definitely not amusing. Once Emma had sat back into her seat she looked at the brunette who had put her hand down and started rubbing her thumb over the pads of her other fingers as if she can feel a residue left from Emma's hand. Regina then looked back at her and did her signature glare and in response Emma just winked at her. She didn't know why she had done that exact response, but it had felt right and the way Regina looked slightly flustered and turned away made her want to keep doing it. That one day started Emma's tradition, every time that she saw the brunette's hand go up for a question she would now give her a high five.
"It's getting old you know, dear." Regina said as she was walking after the blonde in the hall way.
Emma heard someone talk to her, she stopped and turned to face the woman only to find none other than Regina Mills. "I'm sorry what?"
"High fiving me, every time I put my hand up in that class." She mimics the motion and then looks at Emma with a blank face.
The blonde just smiles at her, "I don't think it is. I find it pretty amusing still." She starts to continue walking but Regina reaches for her wrist, accidentally getting her hand halting her in any movement she was going to make. Emma looks down at her hand, the place where they are touching feels tingly.
Regina notices that she grabbed her hand and lets it go like it burned her. She almost looked like she wasn't affected by it, if only she hadn't flushed slightly in her cheeks. "I-Well I don't," She huffs trying to sound mean but the stutter mad that impossible. "It's not funny at all."
Emma sighs, "do you really hate it that much?"
The brunette looks at Emma and lies, "yes."
She immediately starts laughing, "You little liar!"
"What!" She says exasperatedly, "I am not lying!"
"Yes you are," Emma scoffs and rolls her eyes but the smile on her face never leave. "I can tell, I've always been able to."
Regina crosses her arms, "you aren't a super hero, Emma, you don't have some special power that lets you know if someone is lying."
"Hey what period do we have together again?" Emma asks randomly.
"Five," the brunette rolls her eyes.
"No show me with your hand."
Regina was suspicious but slowly rose her hand to show her five, not two seconds later Emma high fives her and then walks away. She was so surprised and confused that she didn't realize what Emma had planned. She turns to face the way that Emma had walked, "YOU'RE A CHILD!"
Emma just laughs and continues walking down the hall way.
