We drive down to London the next day. The car is filled with nerves but I rest my hand on Amy's knee and smile at her occasionally, creating a sense of care too.
We stop in front of a very large house. It is very modern. It is a large black house, it has a matte sheen and a lot of glass features. It looks about three stories from this angle. The inside looks very clean and crisp. There is a large black car on the light gravel outside that has a yellow sign in the back window saying "twins on board".
"That was my room." Amy says and points to the top right window. I look and nod.
"Looks nice from here. But are we going inside?" I ask. Amy sighs.
"My dad works from home. His new wife's car is not here and the kids are at day care at this time. I think it will be good to just talk to my dad." She says. I nod and get out. Amy walks out and joins me.
The walk to the front door seems a lot longer than it really is. The crunch of the gravel is the only sound. There is a breeze but I am too focused to notice much else.
Amy rings the doorbell and holds my hand. I squeeze it and smile at her. She smiles back until the door opens.
The man from the concert opens the door. He looks a lot like Amy. The same hair but shorter. His eyes are slightly darker. They have the same facial structure and skin tone.
"Hey dad." Amy says and gives the man a crooked smile.
"What are you doing here?" He asks, baffled.
"I wanted to talk." Amy shrugs. He nods and we are lead inside. We enter the first room which is a very clean white based living room. Amy and I sit in a sofa while her dad sits on a chair opposite. There is a blue glass coffee table in between us with a picture of the other family. They look happy.
"So..." Amy's dad says awkwardly.
"Why didn't you just leave my mum? It would have been so much easier." Amy says.
"You were both so happy. I loved you both, but I was not happy myself. I wanted to be happy and keep you two happy so I just didn't tell you." He says and gives Amy a sympathetic smile.
"But you made it worse." Amy says and crosses her arms.
"I know that now. I'm sorry Amy." He says sincerely.
"Why didn't you want me? You took the dog instead." Amy says, her voice cracking. I look at her, she looks heartbroken. I squeeze her hand and she smiles at me.
"I knew you hated me Amy. Having joint custody wouldn't have been fair. Believe me I wanted to fight for you, you're my princess, but I don't want you to be with someone you hate." He says.
"You could have let me decide." She mumbles.
"I thought I knew the answer." He sighs.
"You thought you knew a lot of things." Amy says quietly. Her dad chuckles.
"Yeah, I'm stupid really." He says. "I'm stupid for leaving you." He says sincerely.
"How do you keep the house clean with the kids?" Amy asks, now fairly calm.
"I hired a cleaner, the wife and I are in a rough patch too, she is staying away with them for a while." He says and smiles slightly. Amy nods and takes a deep breath.
"Can we look around?" Amy asks. Her dad smirks and nods. Amy and I share a confused look but stand and walk around hand in hand anyway.
The house has a running modern theme. Very clean. Very crisp. Everything is placed perfectly.
"This was my room." Amy says and opens the door marked Amy. We step in and Amy gasps.
"What's wrong?" I ask, not even looking at the room.
"They didn't change anything." She says and walks around the room, tracing her finger over some of the things. "It's exactly how I left it." She says as she runs her hand over the bedsheets.
"It's nice, I would have thought that you would have taken more." I say.
"I literally only took a small bag of clothes, everything else reminded me of him and I hated him." Amy says and looks up at me. She takes a deep breath and smiles as she walks quickly behind me.
"Where are you going?" I ask.
"My dad's office." She smirks. I bite my lip and smile as she opens the door. We walk in. It is very clean like the rest of the house. There is a file cabinet on one side of the room and a bookshelf on the other side. On the white desk there is only a pot of pens and pencils, two pictures and a PC.
"Clean as always." Amy says and walks to the desk. I follow her. The first thing that catches our eyes are the pictures. The one on the left is of Amy and her dad. Amy is about thirteen, holding her bass with her dad giving her a kiss on the cheek. The one on the right is of Amy and both of their parents. They look to be in America. In Disneyland.
"I remember that." Amy says, pointing at the Disneyland picture. "My dad was crapped on five seconds later by a bird." Amy says and we chuckle. As I put down the picture I knock the mouse and the PC screen comes to life. It is a picture of Amy hugging her dad.
"He loves you." I say as I look at the picture.
"Yeah..." Amy says. "Let's go downstairs." Amy says. I hold her hand and we meet Amy's dad in the kitchen. Amy says nothing but hugs her dad. He holds her and they stay like that for a while.
"I'm sorry dad." She says.
"It's ok princess." He says. "I made a bad decision and you had every right to react that way." He says. Amy pulls away and nods.
"So, how is your band doing?" He asks.
"I got kicked out." Amy chuckles.
"What the fuck?" Amy's dad says. Amy smiles.
"Don't worry, I stole their instruments as they are legally mine so I don't think they will do that well without me." Amy says.
"They wouldn't do well without you anyway princess." He says. Amy smiles.
"Well, we have to go dad. I'll text you sometime." Amy says and her dad nods.
"See you." He says and hugs his daughter.
"Nice to meet you sir." I say and shake the man's hand.
"Call me peter." He says. I nod and after another goodbye Amy and I go back to my car and drive home.
"That went well." I say.
"Yeah, He is not as bad as I thought." Amy says. I smile at her and we laugh on the way home.
