He see those person that they've been bumped the flower vase and he started fight until those teen group was defeated, they're promise to respect the spirit's belongings including the picking up the vase were the spirit of young children died. After those teen group departed, a young child spirit showed to him and show gratitude to Charles.

He go immediately there and he see unclear to clear be seen, a resemble of mantis monster called Hollow that the behind of the havoc incident and trying to catching a young child spirit. But, Rica had came and he slashed a Hollow in a single slash, he try to call her but she didn't hear him.
That night, he was in his room and recalling the incident including a Hollow catching young child spirit and defeated by a woman Shinigami, asking "Who's she?" The time came, a window of his room opened and he see the Rica entering and resting, Charles tried to call her but he didn't hear until he kicked her, threw away to his room door and she asking "You can sense me probably? You're only a human." But again, a Hollow appeared hunting a young child spirit then Rica cast a Kidou or Way Of Demon "Sai" to bind Charles and stay there. He tries to break the spell until, forcibly and follows Rica to help her. In that case, she wounded in a Hollow and asking help to Charles until she has no choice, she need to lend her powers to him by stabbing in his chest. That was Charles, a Substitute Shinigami he transforms and having a huge Zanpakutou, who fighting on Hollow with full strength until he amputated it to crushed completely.
So, Charles won, but Rica loses her power except the Kidous she learned. And Rica needs to guide him every time the Hollow appeared.
