"Hurry up." I giggle, jumping onto Cooper's back as he treks through the harsh waves and finds sturdy ground to run on. The water splashes back upon me and cools me down from the heat that Cooper always manages to start inside of me.
Hastily he and I grab and throw on our clothes before the fog lifts and our bareness is exposed.
"Hurry up Kyla! We're gonna leave without your ass!" Riley yells from afar.
It's an hour past twelve now and most of the crowds have gone home. Except for us. "Shit." I laugh, jogging up the shore behind him as he tugs on his shirt meanwhile I slip on my shoes.
Cooper throws me his hand and I take it, allowing him to practically force me to our destination with his strength. We arrive at the parking lot much quicker than if I would have run alone and before Cooper I used to run alone. I used to sleep alone, love alone and even cry alone.
Being lonely for so long has made me realize that everything I did alone is better with Cooper. I'll never forget that or take it for granted. Not ever.
I see Riley's and Chloe's face through the windshield. They sit in silence in the working car, looking up with wide eyes at our arrival.
Opening the back seat car door, I shove Cooper inside and climb in after him. Once we're all set, Riley is driving off into the dark night.
The car is hushed for the rest of the ride home. I see my neighborhood approaching in the distance and the thought of sleep in my near future settles something inside of me.
"Thank you Riley, see you soon." I reach forward and kiss her cheek, doing the same with Chloe before exiting the vehicle entirely.
Cooper shuts the door behind him, thanking her as well and the car pulls off. The darkness consumes it before it has a chance to leave the suburbs.
"Now, there is something you must know. . ." I inform the boy as soon as he turns around to face me.
"And what is that?" Cooper asks curiously. Taking his hand in mine, I walk us up towards the front doorstep.
"There is another man in my life."
"Excuse me?" Cooper halts, yanking me back into him in the process. I can't help it, I cackle at the peevish expression playing in his eyes.
"His name is snickers. He is quite the hunk." I wink.
The fire hasn't quite dwindled just yet but he manages to smile.
"Just come in, you'll see." I tug his arm once again.
"Oh he's here?" Cooper hums.
"Yes, he actually might just be in my bed where I left him."Cooper opens the front door himself. "If some woman named their son Snickers and I find a fucking man in your bed. . ." Tilting his head just enough to stare me down, he says. "His bones will be broken."
"Okay." I raise my hands in surrender, guiding Cooper up stairs until I stand in front of my door, my hand on the knob. Anticipating what's to come when I reveal the dog.
"Now, feast your eyes upon my very special man-"
I swiftly open the door, just my bedside lamp illuminates the light fur coat of the puppy sprawled out on my bed."Snickers." I present the dog. Holding him up for Cooper to see.
"How can I compete with such a man." He ruffles Snickers' ears. Kissing his nose and leaning down to his ear, Cooper whispers. "She's mine, Snickers."
