"Do you think he's actually here?" Carl asked, trying to get all the information he could from his team as they worked on helping his family.
"As of right now, we have no reason to believe that he is absolutely here." Penny told him, "But, obviously he's not making himself known anywhere right after breaking out of prison."
"Are we going to have to send them away?" Carl asked almost inaudibly.
Usually in cases like these, when people are being tracked and threatened, they'd put them in witness protection, give them a new identity, and move away from everything and everyone they know. At least until it's safe again.
"It's too soon to tell." She shrugged, then set a comforting hand on top of his, "We'll take care of this, Carl. You guys will be okay."
"How did he even find them when he was in new mexico?" Carl sighed, his frustrated hands tugging at his hair.
"We're thinking he-"
"Daddy!" Will interrupted once again, his feet smacking across the ground as he ran up to Carl, "I learned a magic trick, wanna see?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah let's see." Carl mumbled, his eyes still looking over the new case notes he was studying.
"Daddy, you have to look." Will giggled, patiently waiting for Carl's attention.
"Okay." Carl muttered, slowly moving his gaze over to his son.
Will began to dramatically whip around a red sheet, yelling out some fake magic spell. Carl kept his eyes on him for a while, before his mind went back to the issue. He looked back at the files, his brain thinking over everything that happened when he was originally on the case, and how it would match up with the new information his team had gotten.
"Daddy!"
"Hm?" Carl hummed absentmindedly, his busy brain still attempting to take in all of the information in front of him.
"You gotta watch." Will reminded him.
Carl just lightly nodded, not really registering Will's words. He kept scanning over the papers when he heard Will's foot stomp against the ground and an impatient sigh fall from his lips.
"Dad!"
"What, Will?" Carl snapped, causing Will to flinch slightly with wide eyes.
Carl sighed, "Buddy, I'm sor-"
"I'm gonna find mama." Will muttered, quickly shuffling away from Carl.
Carl sighed again, leaning back into his chair with a hand over his face.
"He's scared." Penny observed quietly.
"No, he's not." Carl chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "I didn't yell at him, I-"
"That's not what I meant." Penny shook her head.
Carl's face dropped, realizing that he hadn't explained anything to his confused child after abruptly leaving their home.
"You think he's scared?" He mumbled.
"Of course he's scared. He's four years old and he's confused." Penny sighed, "And his dad is acting weird and won't tell him anything."
