"Ooh, muffins!" I said as I walked into Ben's apartment the next morning. Tucker, Danny, and Ben were all sitting at the kitchen table, eating a full breakfast that was set out on the table.
"No Dr. Amin?" Ben asked when he saw I was alone and over early.
"No he was on call all last night." I answered as I reached for one of the seemingly homemade blueberry muffins on the table in a muffin tin. "Who made these?"
"Courtney." The boys said in unison and I let the muffin roll out of my hand and onto the table like it had scorched my palm. I wiped my hand off on my shirt, my face contorted.
"Hey, Cas!" The overly peppy voice rang as Courtney emerged from the hall, fastening the top button of her horrifically pink blouse.
"It's pronounced 'Cassie'." I said with a fake smile.
"Oh, sorry. Ben calls you Cas, so I assumed--"
"Well, you assumed wrong." I said, still trying to be civil with a faux smile plastered on my face.
"Knock knock!" A kind voice said as the door opened yet again. It was Riley, carrying a pink cardboard box like the one I had brought a few days ago for the guys. "I brought donuts!" She called in a singsong voice, opening the lid to reveal a dozen donuts of different types. "Oh... you have breakfast already."
"Yeah, I know it's not much. I didn't have much to work with." Courtney said and I looked at the plates of eggs, bacon, muffins, and toast.
"Yeah, what kind of peasant breakfast is this?!" I exclaimed sarcastically, throwing my hands in the air. "This is an outrage!"
Courtney gave a chortle, doubling over and clutching her stomach. "You are so funny, Cassie!" She raved, wiping a tear from her eyes as I watched her in discomfort.
"Is she serious?" I whispered to Riley, leaning back towards her. It seemed like she didn't know either, but from the fact Courtney was still recovering from her laughter, it was authentic.
"Well, I have to get to work, but I'll see you all tomorrow at the game! By, lovebug!" She gushed, leaning over to kiss Ben. She then tugged on Danny's hair, talking to him like he was a baby. "I can't believe I know a real life professional hockey player!"
"Bye, Cassie!" Courtney apparently felt the need to hug me before leaving for work and I cringed. Courtney eventually let go and waved goodbye to the apartment's current occupants before closing the door behind her.
"It touched me..." I mumbled, holding my arms away from my body as if I had just crawled out of a vat of toxic waste. "Someone get me a jug of bleach! The entire apartment is contaminated!" Ben shook his head, standing up and carrying his plate to the sink. "AH!" I yelled, jumping back and pointing at the first chore Ben had done in years. "Who are you and where did Courtney hide the real Ben?!"
"Cassie, I thought you said you liked her?" Ben questioned.
"Yeah, I also said you had a shot with that waitress at the pizza place. I lie." I shrugged.
"Why don't you like her?"
I jumped excitedly. "I have a list in my room!""Cassie, can you please just try to get along with her!" Ben begged, his palms pressed together beseechingly. I could see a pleading look in his eyes.
I sighed. "You actually like this girl?" I asked sincerely.
"She's not just a one night stand, Cassie." Ben assured me honestly.
"Okay." I gave in. "Then I'll try my hardest." I promised. "How about I plan something for all of us? Tonight. My place?"
"I think Courtney would really like that." Ben said with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Cas. I really appreciate it."
