"Ma'am, we have to started pushing. We can't wait a minute longer"
"NO! I'm not doing this without him. I'll wait all...AH SHIT!" I cried out again as another contraction came.
"Bahja, honey, listen to the doctor. You're only putting yourself through more pain" Miss Mabel said as she rubbed my forehead gently.
The cool feeling of her hand had somewhat set me at ease but not as much as Chresanto being here would have. I had been waiting for this moment for the past eight months and I still wasn't ready for when my water finally broke. One minute, I was doing laundry and the next minute Miss Mabel is driving like a maniac on the highway trying to get to the hospital with me laid out on the backseat.
"I want Chresanto, Mabel. This is our child. I'm not doing this without him" I declared straining the last few words as I experienced another contraction.
"Where the hell is he?!" I furiously asked.
Miss Mabel was right, I was putting myself through pain but I wouldn't have to if Chresanto would just hurry his ass up so I can get this baby out.
"I told you honey, he was on the other side of town when I called. He's on his way but I don't think he'll make it. You gotta push"
I licked my chapped lips and looked at Miss Mabel's pleading face before I gave up and nodded.
"Fine" I said hating Chresanto at this point.
I warned him that this could happen at any time and suggested that he avoid going too far on business but he insisted.
"Man, ain't nothing gonna happen while I'm gone. I promise"
And I was stupid enough to believe him. How the hell would he know how my body works?
"Alright" the doctor said before pulling up a stool to where she could get a good view of my open legs. "Let's start pushing. One...two...thr-"
"B?! Which room did he say?" a faint voice said from outside.
I sighed in relief because I'd know that voice anywhere.
"223, bruh. Right up there" a deeper one said.
Before anyone knew it, Chresanto burst through the doorway like a bat out of hell with Cedric trailing in behind him. I had never felt so much joy and relief in my life.
"Chres! Oh thank God you made it. We were just about to start...MMMMM!" I groaned as another contraction ripped through my pelvic area.
"I'm here, babygirl. I wouldn't miss this for the world" he saidf before kissing my forehead and taking my hand in his.
"What's up, Bahja?" Cedric said standing on the other side of the bed next to Miss Mabel.
"Oh nothing, Cedric. Just pushing a whole baby out of my vagina. How about you?" I said in a fake "nice store clerk" voice.
"Just trying to get rid of that image you just gave me" he said shaking his head.
"Okay, I'm sorry to interrupt but Ms. Rodriguez we've really got to start pushing now" the doctor said in a rushed tone.
"She's right. I kept ya'll waiting long enough. C'mon, babe"
I looked up at Chresanto and saw how nervous and frantic he looked. I hadn't seen him like this since I had gotten kidnapped last year. He must have been losing his mind earlier at the thought of missing the birth of his first child.
"Okay, Bahja you ready?" she asked.
I tightened my grip on Chresanto's hand bracing myself for my first push.
