DAWN'S POV
My name is Dawn. I'm in a mob, my father's mob. He's the boss. He pretty much controls the whole block in my shitty part of town. I'm still a normal kid though. I go to a public high school just as every other student my age. The year was 1965 and summer just ended. Today's the first day back. I said goodbye to my dad and grabbed my keys. I guess I owned a nice car, it was a few years old. I drove a 1957 Cadillac. I got in and started it, lighting a cigarette. I drove to the school and parked in my usual spot, I have been parking there since I started at this school. No one parked in it because they knew it was mine. I pretty much got whatever I wanted because my father was who he was. I got out of my car and flicked my cigarette butt. I walked into the school. I walked into a kid and apologized. I may be a gang member, but I still have manners. The kid tried to yell at me and tell me to watch where I was going, I just kept walking and laughed. I could over hear another kid telling him not fuck with me. I grinned and walked to my class. There was this table at the back of the room by the window. It was my seat, no one else sat there. Ever. It was by the window so I could smoke during class. Most people aren't allowed to smoke during class or in the school but I'm the boss' daughter- I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. I sat in my seat and lit up a cigarette and watched as the room filled with students. I was in a younger grade because I'd miss a lot of school doing my 'job'. If you know what I mean. I was supposed to be in grade 13, but I was still taking grade 10 classes. I watched these two girls come in as i inhaled my cigarette. They kept an eye on me as they walked to their seats. All I did was exhale slowly and wiggle my eyebrows at them. They looked frightened. I was thinking about my next 'job' and completely zoned out. Before I knew it, the bell rang, signifying class was over. I was leaning on a tree in the back of the school, about to light a cigarette when I saw some kid being shoved on the football field. "Hey!" I yelled and ran over. They saw me and split. Some new kid was sitting there, collecting the papers from his binder. "Hey, are you okay?" I asked him, picking up some papers.
"Yeah, thanks." I handed him them.
"What's your name?" I sat down next to him.
"James, what about you?" he was organizing his binder.
"Dawn." I smiled at him. He seemed shy. He had blonde hair that swooped over to the side and he had green eyes. Don't tell no one, but he was kinda cute. I pulled out my cigarettes and lit one. I held out the pack. "You smoke?"
"Yeah, sure." he grabbed one. "Thanks." I nodded and lit mine, handing him the pack of matches. We sat there and smoked for about a minute when I spoke up.
"Can I call you Jimmy?! Thanks Jimmy." I didn't even give him an opportunity to answer, he shook his head, not saying anything. "Listen, if you stick with me, no one will bother you anymore." he tilted his head and exhaled. "My dad is the boss of the biggest mob in Green Bo. No one fucks with me because of that. And if you're friends with me, you'll be fine." I looked around, exhaling.
"Is that why those kids ran away as soon as you came over?" I nodded. "And why are people scared of you? I mean, I know who your dad is but why?" I looked at him.
"Because I'll kill any mother fucker who tries to fuck with me, my family or my friends." I opened my jacket to show him my switchblade and tiny revolver.
"Woah, remind me not to piss you off."
"Good idea." we both laughed. "What class do you have?"
"English, you?"
"Same. Wanna ditch?" I asked, flicking my cigarette butt.
"Sure, where to?" We stood up.
"My house, come on." We walked to my car and got in.
