Third person POV

20 years later.

A lot had happened after getting rescued, but the eerie memories remained as everyone grew older. Lizzie began going by her birth name, Elizabeth, shortly after getting off the island. She claimed that every time she heard her name, it sounded as if Simon and Piggy were saying it. She was haunted for years after, and often had nightmares. Ralph was always there to comfort her.

Jack Merridew didn't last, and he died at the young age of nineteen from alcoholism. Ralph and Elizabeth attended his funeral, despite everything he had done to them. They had lost touch with everyone else on the island except for Peter, who did well in school and was now in college to become a doctor.

Ralph and Elizabeth got married at nineteen, but not before having two children, a son Charles, at the age of sixteen, and a daughter Vera, at the age of eighteen. At the age of twenty-three, they had another daughter Adelaide. Ralph had suggested they name their son Simon, but just the mention of his name brought Elizabeth to tears.

She hadn't done well for years after getting off the island, but with the love and care of Ralph, she decided to write out all her memories into a book that was published, and was now extremely popular. Ralph became a successful businessman, but he was more proud of his wife.

Even at thirty-three Elizabeth still had nightmares of the island. It had taken a toll on her harder than it had on Ralph. He understood, however, because he believed she had gone through much more than he had.

Ralph and Elizabeth's family was happy. They had everything they needed, and having children helped Elizabeth through her horrible mindset. They were both wonderful parents, and many claimed they had never seen a love as strong as theirs.

Fifty years later.

Elizabeth sat quietly in her rocking chair, waiting for her children to pick her up and bring her to the airport.

She loved her family and everyone in it. Charles married at twenty-four and had three boys, Carter, James, and Christopher. Vera married at twenty and had twins, a girl and boy, Adrienne and Victor, and Adelaide was not married, but had a son and two daughters, Danny, Agnes, and Lucy. Some of Elizabeth's grandchildren even had children, but there were almost too many to count.

Ralph had died three years earlier, and Elizabeth was ready to go. She didn't, however, want to go in her home. It was time for her to return to the island.

She was not fit to fly, that much was obvious, but with how successful she was, she managed to get a helicopter that would fly her back to the island.

Even after writing a book about it, nobody bothered to visit, and it never became a fancy resort or anything. It made her happier, almost, to think about how the place where her two best friends died wasn't ruined by tourists.

Charles, Vera and Adelaide dropped their mother off at the airport. They hadn't told their children what was happening. They knew their mother was stubborn, and no amount of persuasion could keep here where she was. They wouldn't tell their children about her leaving- they would tell them she passed quietly in her sleep, in her bed.

They passed around hugs and I love you's before sending their mother off in the helicopter to return back to the island, where she swore she would never return.

Everything was different when she was dropped off. The trees and plants grew back in a way that made the island look completely new and different. There were no longer footprints in the sand, nor the one hut that remained seventy years earlier. Elizabeth didn't dare climb her way up to castle rock. She was too old, and no good memories remained there.

Elizabeth sat in the sand where she used to sit with Simon, and looked out towards the sea. She could remember her younger self sitting in the exact same spot. It made her heart ache thinking about everything she left behind when she left the island. There was a safe feeling in the air, despite all the negative occurrences. She looked to her left, only to see ten year old Simon smiling at her, his eyes blue and his face dirty. She looked to her right and saw Piggy, his face pudgy and his spectacles cracked and dirty.

"Hello boys." Elizabeth spoke, her old and worn voice cracking as she smiled at the two boys. She had never forgotten what they looked like.

"Lizzie," Simon said. Elizabeth almost shuddered at the use of her old nickname, but coming out of his mouth sounded so right. "I see you came back. Why?" He asked, his voice young and sweet.

"I wanted to see this place one last time before I go." She replied.

"It's a lot different now," Piggy said, "you almost wouldn't even recognize it."

"It was a nice island, wasn't it?" Elizabeth said. She was savouring every moment she could with the boys, in the sun.

"Lizzie," Simon spoke again. This time his voice sounded different, and Elizabeth knew what was happening. "It's time to go now."

And so Elizabeth took Simon and Piggy's hand and let them lead her to her death. Elizabeth became young Lizzie again, and she looked around her to see Simon and Piggy and Jack an Ralph all smiling at her, their hands outstretched and ready for whatever was to come next.
