For Real or For Publicity?

Chapter Thirty Three

Joanne Belle Kameron

After an ice cream dinner with strawberries for dessert, Brandon and I went back to his apartment.

  "I'm going outside to get mail," he said.

  I stuffed some cherries into my mouth. "Ummph,"

I mumbled.

  "Miss Joanne Belle, you have three mail messages," Brandon said.

  Without warning, he tore open the first envelope and began reading. "Dear Joanne Belle, this is Clara Enchanted. We would like to invite you and Brandon to do a talk show with us, Saturday."

  He threw it onto the couch. "Sounds bore-tastic. Next one. Dear Joanne Belle, here's your pay for the week. With love from Modest Management?" he read, surprise taking over him with each word.

  My eyes widened while his narrowed at me. "That's nothing," I said hurriedly, grabbing the mail from him.

  "Joanne, what was that?" He asked slowly.

  I gave up trying to cover for myself. "I tried to terminate the contract but they just wouldn't allow me," I tried to explain.

  "They didn't allow you or you didn't try?" he snapped.

  He thought I stood this low? "Of course I did try, Brandon. You know I love you," I began.

  "No," he cut me off. "You don't love me. You're just doing this for fame and money. I can't believe you."

  I tried to guide his hand to the couch but he pulled away. "No! Just . . . go away!" he snapped. "Pack and leave!"

  Tears brimmed at the edge of my eyes. "Fine."

  I immediately went to our room and began packing. After that, I left.

  While waiting for the cab, I couldn't help but keep turning back to look at the door.

  Come on, Brandon. This is the part where you open the door and say that you've overreacted and wants me back and you would like to give me a chance to explain, I thought desperately.

  But when the cab pulled up, I gave our - no, Brandon's - house one last look.

  Goodbye, Brandon, I said silently.
