Cold fear crept through her as she crossed the floor, towards Jake. Each step seemed to take an eternity, but before she knew it she was standing over him.

Well... what was left of him. She stared down at him in shocked disbelief. There was blood pooled around his body, seeping from an obvious gash across his head. His skin was pale and ghostly, and she was terrified that she couldn't see any signs of movement.

Why had she left him alone?

Slowly, she knelt down next to him and felt her eyes well up.

"Jake..." She whimpered, putting a gentle hand to his forehead.

To her immense relief, she felt heat on his skin, and felt the slight murmurs of breath on his lips.

Shaking, she inspected the wound. It was obvious that she was going to need to do something to stop the bleeding or he might not make it.

She glanced around desperately.

There was a bag nearby, sticking out of one of the lockers. She dove on it and tore the contents out, inspecting what was strewn on the ground. Luck was shining on them, apparently, because the bag contained a few articles of clothing and an old towel. It smelled musty, but it was better than nothing.

Quickly as she could, she used the clothing as bandages and had his head wrapped in almost no time flat. At first the blood had seemed unwilling to stop, and she was terrified that it wouldn't stop, but after a time and a lot of tears and prayers, the bleeding finally subsided.

She was sticky from the blood, and she stank like copper, but she refused to leave his side for even a moment.

By the time she was done working on him, he didn't seem as bad, and she breathed a sigh of relief. As she sat next to him, holding his hand, he started to stir.

Jake's eyes fluttered open and he groaned in pain.

"What...the...hell..." He choked out, "...happened?"

She hugged him, "You're ok! Jake, can you hear me?"

"Ooof!" He winced and she released him with a few profuse apologies. He looked at her with surprise, "Huh, hey there Luna, what happened?" His eyes were wide with confusion, but she was overjoyed to see a pink flush returning to his cheeks. He reached up and touched his 'bandaged,' head as she explained what had happened.

"Do you remember anything..?" She asked, trying to keep him lying down.

"Luna don't!" He snipped, pushing her hand away and sitting up anyways, "I feel fine, really I do." He patted his head, "I mean, I have a killer headache, but I'm ok."

He smiled reassuringly, but she didn't buy it.  He shook his head and went to stand up, but before she could even protest, his phone began to ring in his pocket.

"Oh, just a second," he murmured, fishing it out.

"Hello?"

"Jake! What's up man? Are you coming home anytime soon? You told me to call if you were late.."

Jake looked at his watch and covered his eyes.

"Oh yeah man, sorry about that, something happened..."

"Oh yeah? I bet!"

Jake looked embarrassed.

"No. No! Nothing like that. I rung my bell pretty good.... Seriously, we need to talk when I get there.  We'll be home soon."
