"Don't move..." he gasped, trying to stem the flow of blood that was pouring from her side.
She nodded, biting back tears. Warmth spread across her lower belly, and a sweet numbness followed. Her eyes felt heavy and she was suddenly so, so tired.
"N..no sweetie, look at me!" The older boy grabbed her chin and looked into her eyes frantically, "don't close your eyes ok? Just stay awake for me ok?" She looked up at him, and nodded. She didn't know why he didn't want her to sleep but he looked so scared. Maybe he didn't want to be alone?
"It doesn't hurt anymore..." she murmured, trying to reassure him, but it came out in a slur, and even she couldn't understand herself. His face went pale as a sheet. His icy blue eyes darkened and widened and he cursed under his breath, but she was too tired to tell him that her sissy had warned her that cursing was bad. Didn't he know that santa didn't like curse-words?
She swayed, leaning heavily against him and her stomach started to turn.
"H... hey!" He gasped, trying to keep his weight against her stomach, "sweetie, look at me! You have to keep your eyes open! O...ok? Please...please..." She couldn't really hear him anymore... he sounded so far away.... and it was so warm and cozy all of a sudden. Her body dropped softly to the floor, her limbs weighing her down.
His voice fluttered into her ears.
"Listen to me, please don't fall asleep ok? You can sleep after we get out of here ok? Open you eyes.. there you go, look at me ok? No..no, don't close them! Watch me ok? Just don't close them, we'll play a game ok? Ok...? Please, please...."
His eyes swam into her view and she frowned. Why did he look so sad? Tears welled in his eyes, threatening to spill over.
Did big kids cry? She wondered wearily. She didn't think so.
She blinked, suddenly scared. Big kids don't cry... unless something really bad happens! She had only seen her sister cry once... when their dog Mitzie got hit by a car...
She blinked harder, tears welling in her own eyes. But... she didn't hurt anymore though... she just wanted to close her eyes....but she was so scared, and she could see that he was as well.
His face grew wavy, and foggy, and her eyelids started to drift closed again. She squinted, something was hovering over the boy's left shoulder...a shadow.
"Hey..." she mumbled, trying to point.
The boy frowned, leaning in closer, trying to hear her.
She stared at the shadow. A cold fear settled in her stomach and she knew she should be afraid, but in her confusion she couldn't remember why.
"Hey..." she muttered again, grabbing weakly for his shoulder, "he..."
The boy's eyebrows knitted in concern, not understanding. The shadow leaned closer, grinning at her over his shoulder. All she could see through the blackness was a shiny gold glint of light, seemingly surrounded by deep purple, and horrible eyes that were brimming with hate.
She squinted, nonplussed. The boy finally saw that she was peering over his shoulder and turned to look.
He screamed suddenly, hurting her ears. She was still in his arms and when he twisted, she fell backwards, away from him, and the pain came shrieking back as she landed.
"No..." She gasped, reaching out for him as the black shadow ripped him from her grasp. Something glinted in the dark and she shied away instinctively, crumbling in a pile of fear and pain.
So many noises...so many bad noises, invaded her brain. Shouting... and so many screams... She closed her eyes tight, begging the pain to let her go so she could sleep and drift away from the terror.
Luckily, somebody seemed to have heard her fears and before she knew it- she had been swallowed by nothingness and silence.
