She awoke some time later, and rolled, searching for Spring Bonnie. He was nowhere around, but she felt the little stuffed plushie where he had been. Curious, she scooped it up and crept quietly out of the cubby hole, listening and looking for him.
She gasped in surprise when she entered the main room, where the light bulb hung from the ceiling.
The whole room had transformed while she slept. She blinked, thinking that she had somehow gone mad. The once bare and damp room was fully carpeted now, with a soft brown rug and wooden walls. There were bookcases full of scattered books, a little cubby with a toilet and sink in it, a bed with soft red blankets, and posters of the pizzeria everywhere. There was a little desk littered with papers and pens, and a little lamp, shedding extra light around the room, and the trap door had completely vanished, a rickety looking wooden door on the wall in its place.
She stood, mouth agape. She backtracked to the little cubby hole, but found it gone. In it's place was a dark closet with an empty shelf, a few empty hangars, and nothing else, not even the bedding from the night before.
What...? She slowly walked back into the strange room. She still clung to the little bunny, the only proof that she had that last night wasn't just a dream. She wanted to call out to Spring Bonnie but now she wasn't sure that she could trust him. Well...to be fair, she wasn't sure she could trust herself at this point.
She crept up to the desk, afraid to make too much noise. The scattered papers were mostly blank, some had numbers and calculations scrawled across them. There were receipts in a pile by the corner of the desk, and scribble marks where somebody had tried to get a stubborn pen to write.
Since there wasn't anything useful in the room, she decided to try and leave. She walked cautiously to the door, and reached out for the door knob, half expecting something to open it from the other side, like some silly horror film. She sighed in relief when the door opened without a problem. She had thought it might be locked.
She stepped into a poorly lit hall and was hit with a soft breeze and the scent of fresh air. She gasped, shocked. This wasn't a hall at all, but rather, a little walkway outside the building, hugging a scraggly looking stand of trees. It was dark because the building was closed, and there were no streetlights. She looked around in awe. She was still at the pizzeria, she could see the sign against the night sky.
It looked amazing. She had never seen so many stars before! And the moon hung like a giant silver coin over the building, ominous and beautiful.
She shivered in the chill of the night. Here she was, on the precipice of change, and she was scared. She turned to the old and quiet building, thinking. She could leave now, and never return... be a normal person. She frowned, pressing a hand to her head. But... How could she forgive herself for leaving the tortured souls inside? They couldn't leave.
Her heart ached for her friends and she took a step closer to the stone wall. Then again, she could have a family, a life. No more fear and loneliness... She felt a tugging in her heart and took a step into the cold darkness, and then another. The grass tickled her bare ankles, a random and new sensation that she loved. She took a few more steps away from the building, her heart beating like a drum. The moon regarded her silently as she walked slowly away from her home.
Freedom, like she had never felt before, invigorated her and she took off at a run. Next to the building and past the small copse of trees, was a big open field, hugged on all sides by more trees, a road coming up to the pizzeria in front, and a parking lot out back.
She ran through the field until she was exhausted, and then she collapsed into a pile on the ground, rolling over to watch the stars in the night sky. It was so unreal... but it couldn't have been a dream, it was too vivid.
