"Your mind is your biggest weapon"

Haley
31/2/35

"Haley honey, Brian is here!"

My mom called out to me from the living room. I was wearing a pair of black jeans with a red tan top and a black leather jacket, and putting finishing touches on my make-up.

Brian had invited me for this party and I had tried my best to escape going altogether.

His older brother signed up with the army and they decided to throw him a get away party.
A party like that should totally be a family and a few friends affair right?

But nah.

Every kid in school would probably show up. I totally believe the whole get away thing was just an excuse to throw an outrageous party. I was pretty sure half of the kids who were going to be there didn't even know why the party was happening, talk less of knowing the guy being sent away.

It was silly.

Seeing how I totally was against it, I still wonder why I agreed to go.

Truth is, Brian is a close friend and he practically begged me for weeks just to make me come. Since all my friends were tired of me being a spoil sport and Brian's continuous begging was beginning to annoy the hell out of me, I agreed to go.

I looked out of my room window and saw a blue car parked in front.
Brian's car.
It looked filled.
I could bet Trina and Melissa were in there too.
Trina was Brian's girlfriend and Melissa was my closest friend.
She moved to our neighborhood last fall and we got along almost instantly. She wasn't a party addict like Brian but she attended a few parties once in a while.
I applied my mascara, grabbed my purse and headed down the stairs.
I walked down the stairs and hugged my mom as I said goodbye.

I rolled my eyes and she tried not to laugh.

She knew how much I didn't want to go but she was probably happy I was leaving so she could have the house to herself.

I cringed a little trying to imagine just what she would do in my absence.

My dad would be back from work in a couple of hours and they would totally kick off their no-children-here routine.

I once caught them dancing to a music video on TV. They were apparently trying to imitate the dancers. I couldn't even laugh. I just leaned on the wall and wondered what sort of sickos I had as parents.

My dad seemed to be the star as he dramatically placed one of his legs on the couch and began wriggling his waist.

I choked on my laughter.
I held it in. I just couldn't laugh. If I did, it would blow my cover. They were totally oblivious to my presence as they danced away with no shame.

I had never seen my parents like this. Around my sister and I they were so grown up and mature. Scolding when necessary and sometimes, even when not. Seeing them like this was a highlight of my lifetime. Honestly.

But, the minute dad bent his knees and attempted to flap his butt in an up-and-down motion, I couldn't hold it anymore.

I burst out laughing and I don't remember ever laughing like that my whole life.

Beautiful memories. Beautiful memories.

I closed the front door behind me as I stepped out.

'Hello, mamacita. You wanna ride with me or ride me?'
