Chapter One - Tobias
It being Mother's Day, I made Evelyn breakfast in bed. We've been getting along fairly well ever since... the worst day of my life. There's yet another useless, monotonous council meeting later today, but prior to that, I'm having lunch with Christina.
I'm currently standing outside a restaurant, waiting for her, but she's late. As always. Noon arrives presently and passes, and Christina still hasn't arrived. Getting impatient, I tap my foot and thunder crackles, matching my mood. Christina finally approaches and greets me cheerfully. "Hey Tobias." It's been more than two years since I have lost Tris and Christina has set up date after date for me, but nothing has worked out so far. I can only love Tris, and my heart will always be broken. I'll always be waiting for someone that will never be here again.
At lunch, we talk about jobs and current events. Christina and Zeke are the last true friends I have left. Everyone else has given up on trying to connect socially with me. I've been too distant, too depressed for these last few years. After lunch, Christina and I hug goodbye and depart, headed in opposite directions.
Heading toward the township building, I pass the old Erudite headquarters. Everything in this city resurrects memories that I want nothing to do with, but moving away from it would be like letting go of Tris all over again. When I get there, I take the stairs to the 21st floor and open the far door on the left.
"The city is showing progress-" The man in the black suit abruptly stops speaking and glares at me as I walk in, apparently late. "I'm sorry, continue." I clear my throat and sit down in a seat as far away from the front as I can get. "As I was saying, the rebuilding of the city is coming along quickly." Mr. Black Suit resumes his infinite rant about reconstructing what was the home of the factions, but what is now the home of a diverse population. Just ordinary people leading inconspicuous lives. I'm too busy staring out the window to pay any attention.
After the meeting is over, I go home to a bland supper with Evelyn. We're having chicken on the grill. I bet Tris would've liked my cooking. Tris and I could have lived together, led a life together. Tears come to my eyes and pour down my face. I loved her and she was taken away from me, and that's not fair. Life was never fair.
"So, Tobias, how are you?" Evelyn asks. I answer with silence; she already knows exactly how I am. Dinner ends and I go into the spare bedroom and open the closet. The only thing hanging is Tris's black dress, the exact dress she picked out before she got her tattoos. I loved her tattoos. I hold the dress in my hands and I can still smell Tris very, very faintly if I try. Sobs rack my body and I fall to my knees, still holding the dress. Five more seconds of weakness. "Five..." Take a deep breath. "Four..." Wipe the tears away. "Three..." Erase Tris from my mind. "Two..." Live life. Move on. "One."
