"Students today we have someone new that will be joining us" I looked up from staring at my hands and saw a girl walk in. She looked so familiar, like someone I had seen around town. Her brown hair resting peacefully on her shoulders and that smile. It was that girl from the hospital. "Hello i'm Emily" She said, her billion dollar smile growing even wider than it already was. I felt my lips quiver and a small smile made its way to my face, it was as if her smile was contagious.

Her eyes traveled around the classroom and sparked up when she saw me. Immediately she waved her hand at me happily. I looked down and bit my lips in response, unsure how to react. "Do you know him Emily?" The teacher asked, in which Emily responded with a hearty nod. "Then go ahead and sit next to him, he could do with a...friend. New friend." The teacher added abruptly, all eyes were on me in a second, trying to catch a nonexistent reaction.

I just sat there, with Emily beside me. She listened to what the teacher said, I listened to my heart beat. It was a steady beat, up and down gently but I felt no warmth when it pumped. I couldn't help but long for that feeling again, the warm fiery sensation at the pit of your stomach when a family member embraced you. I longed to be able to hold my mom again, have her kiss my forehead and mutter an 'I love you'.

Another useless fantasy.

The bell rang and I made my way out of the school building, heading home. Only to be stopped by a hand on my shoulder. Looking around I see Emily smiling behind me, which caused me to turn around completely. She only reached up to my chest, which caused me to chuckle a bit.

"What's so funny?" She asked, oblivious to what had made me chuckle for the first time in two years. "N-nothing" I said and started walking again, flustered by my sudden chuckle. It was unfamiliar, to laugh like that.

"Where you going?" She asked, as she walked down the grey and cracked path beside me. The sun was setting early today, it was winter after all. The fluorescent color of orange lined the air and accented Emily's brown hair perfectly. "..I don't know"
