Someone to Watch Over Me

  Stevie's alternate reality 1979

  Stevie is sitting on the floor watching Sesame Street with Wendy. She has been smiling, singing and generally putting on a happy face for Wendy but inside she's very upset with Lindsey. She thinks

  "Why isn't this life good enough for him? He says he always wanted us to of settled down and had a family, here it is! He got to be married and have a family in that other life, I was alone. Lindsey just doesn't understand!"

  Stevie has also noticed Lindsey hasn't joined her and Wendy in the living room. Stevie's guess is that he's off brooding somewhere else in the house probably with a guitar and a beer. She's known him fifty years but here its been much less time. No matter she thinks she knows Lindsey Adams Buckingham like the back of her own hand. He will come around or he wont. Stevie doesn't care at the moment.

  Wendy shakes Stevie from her reverie by pulling on her mom's hand and saying

  "Look mommy Oscar is hiding in his trash can."

  "If daddy is like Oscar does he have a trashcan he sits in too?"

  Stevie responds

  "I think daddy is off hiding in his trashcan right now!"

  Stevie breaks out in a full case of the giggles. Wendy joins her as Stevie picks her up and sets her in her lap. They continue to watch the characters on Sesame Street do their thing. Stevie kisses her little girl on top of her head and says

  "Do you know how much mommy loves you?"

  Wendy replies without taking her gaze from the TV screen. She holds her little arms out as far as they can go and says

  "This much mommy?"

  Stevie whispers in her ear

  "Even more than that sweetgirl."

  Stevie spends the evening watching TV and coloring in coloring books with Wendy. After giving her a bath and getting her ready for bed, Stevie sits on the side of her bed and says

  "Which bedtime story to do want to hear tonight?"

  Wendy yawns and says

  "I want to hear about princess Stephanie mommy."

  Stevie brushes Wendy's hair back from her eyes and starts the story

  Once upon a time there was a beautiful gypsy princess named Stephanie that lived in the far off place called California.

  Stephanie was obsessed by the moon and the stars. Her father King Jess had the finest craftsman in California make Stephanie special earrings, pendants and rings that featured the stars and moon that she loved.

  Princess Stephanie had everything she could ever want except true love. Stephanie would spend time every night before bed staring out of her castle window watching the moon, the stars and the sea wishing for a handsome prince to come to take her as his own and true love would bloom between them like a beautiful red rose.
