Alexander:My mother and her army turned up very early the next morning and it was so early that I was wondering if I had even slept at all or if it had all been a hoax in my head, but Desiree assured me that I did sleep and apparently more than her.
Desiree ordered the guards to let the approaching army into the castle we were in, which had thankfully lost the smell of smoke and blood now it had been aired out. There were still a few rooms that had severe fire damage and do we could not go in there.
The Vampire army was led into the basement of the castle and away from the encroaching sun. Sun did irritate us, it didn’t instantly set us on fire, must to many of our enemies chagrin and we can go into the sun for a little while and we have to cover up, which is where our armour comes in handy. It is specifically designed to protect us from the sun and it’s rays for a few hours. We have a lot more power and stamina when we are fighting at night, but then we lose the element of surprise, so it’s always a weighing up thing. The only people who are immune to the sun no matter how long they are out there are my family and that’s because we are descended from the original vampire and so our blood is considered pure, whereas other nobles, not all, were turned or descend from a vampire who was turned and it’s something that happens during the turn that leaves them unable to handle the sun as well as my family.
The horses were given to me and I took them to the stables to calm them down, feed them and give them water because they had done a very long and hard journey. I could feel how far they had come and how much they had to do or carry or pull. I settled them down for the day and calmed them down enough that I felt okay with leaving them.
I took my time walking back to Desiree’s office where I was sure my mother and family would be. I cautiously knocked on Desiree’s office and I heard her beckon me in. I took in a deep breath and plunged into the troubled waters I was about to face.
My mother rushed to me and hugged me tight to her and let out a long sigh of relief. This I wasn’t expecting and I realised how much I missed her. I held her tight to me and nuzzled my head into her neck and hair. She smelt of home; of the wild flowers Nanny picked every day, of the old halls and the rose water she uses as perfume.
“Mama…” I whispered out and my mum stroked my hair. “I’m so sorry, I was such a stupid boy and I shouldn’t have hurt you so much for all these years, but I’m different, Desiree helped me change.” I babbled to my mum as I pulled back and looked her in the eyes. My mum had the start of tears in her blue eyes and when we cry, we cry a mixture of blood and tears, it’s a pink mess.
“Hush, you’re safe, that’s all I care about, but I am going to do this.” She said and before I could react, my mother slapped me across the face and because she was a pure vampire and I was weak from no sleep, it made my head spin a bit and I fell to the floor. I rubbed my cheek and clicked my jaw back into place. “Don’t you ever do this again or next time it’ll be more than just your jaw you’ll need to put back into place.” My mother growled angrily at me before helping me to my feet and kissing my sore cheek lovingly.
“Understood” I grumbled.
“Now,” My mother said as she whirled on Desiree and I guess Desiree forgot or never had a mother round on her like mine could. My mother stared at Desiree, sizing her up and I could see Desiree trying to stand her ground and she was doing quite well. “Your Majesty, I am here as the mother of your mate and the soon to be King of the Vampires, are you prepared to rule over the Vampires at his side?” My mother asked Desiree and I gapped at my mother, something which hurt my jaw a lot.
“Mum, you’re stepping down?” My voice sounded so high, it was like I had never gone through puberty and I saw my sister snigger in the corner at my voice.
“Yes, you have a mate now and so I think together you two will be fine, plus it’s time we let the prophecy play out.” My mother shrugged as if she was just giving the keys to a car – yes we had them, but we were traditional and it was less expensive to use horses.
“But mum, for years you’ve said that I would be a terrible King. Why the sudden change?”
“You are different, it’s probably from the mating, but you are different and seem more together then you were before.” My mother said. She gave me a small smile and then her turned her attention towards Desiree. “So I have brought the King and his Queen their army.” My mother concluded.
“I will a good Queen to your people, just as Alexander will be a good King to my people. We will rule as equals.” Desiree said and I nodded in agreement.
My mother nodded slowly and turned back towards me, she moved her hand in thin air and it morphed at her touch. She pulled through the mess of reality and pulled out my Grandfather/father’s crown.
The crown was huge and a little intimidating. It was a pure gold thing with jewels around and into the points. The base had white fluffy fur on it to soften the weight on your head and there were little tear drop shaped rubes placed every couple of centimetres to give the illusion of falling blood. The points were pointed straight to represent stakes and there was a huge cross in the middle of one of them, made of silver.
When I was a kid my dad let me try it on once and it slopped down my face, but it was also extremely heavy and when my dad picked it up, he said it felt lightweight. He said that there was a spell on it – only someone truly ready to be King would feel no weight when picking up such a heavy object, both literally and metaphorically.
My mother did the hand swirling again and pulled through the Queen’s crown, which was a replica of the King’s, but it was smaller and looked more delicate.. My mother held on to this Crown and she nodded for Desiree and I to come forward.
“Of course we’ll have a proper ceremony at home a little later – after the whole war business – but this will have to do for now.” She said and then she cleared her throat in a very business, don’t mess with me, sort of tone and I held Desiree’s hand as my mother started.
“I stand before you both today as the current ruler of the Vampire Kingdom of Old. I, Zofia Rosalinda Esmerelda Robertson the first, Queen of all Vampire Kind and lands, do hereby abdicate in favour of my Son, Alexander Zacharias Vladimir Robertson and his mate Desiree Gabriella Mannero, Queen of the Werewolves. Do you, Alexander, accept this Crown, which has been passed from King to King since the Kingdom began?” My mother asked me and my heart dropped out of my stomach. What did I get myself into? Was I ready to be King? Of two countries? Can I handle this all? My heart was trying to burst out of my chest and my head was swimming and then with one squeeze of my hand, it was all gone because Desiree had squeezed my hand. I looked down at her and I smiled. I could do this, as long as I had her. She was like a Prozac that I’d been waiting for, for years. She knew what I needed and I needed her by my side. I could not have become King without her.
I looked back at my mother and let out the shaky breath I had in my lungs. “I am, my mother, my ruler and Queen.” I said and my father stepped forward with the Crown in his hand and my heart jumped a little again, but Desiree’s hand in mine kept me calm. This crown, which was once so daunting and weighed heavily to me, now felt light as it was placed in my hand and when I didn’t move or show that it was heavy, my father smiled and placed it on my head.
My mother turned to Desiree and gave her a small smile as well. “Do you, Desiree Gabriella Mannaro, Queen of the Werewolves, accept the Crown of Queen of the Vampires and promise to stand side by side with Alexander?” My mother asked and Desiree raised herself up to her fullest height before uttering that she would. My mother placed the delicate copy of my Crown on to Desiree’s hand and when she didn’t flinch at the weight, my mother placed it on Desiree’s head.
My parents took a step back and smiled before they got down on one knee to bow to us. My siblings quickly followed and put their hands on their hearts. “To the King and Queen!” They shouted.
The prophecy had been part-way fulfilled, we were now King and Queen of both the Werewolves and the Vampires. Now we just had to win this war and bring the country to peace and prosperity – easy right?
