The next few weeks just passed in a blur. Bodies were buried in a mass grave, my parents were buried in the family burial plot and Alexander and I were properly coronated. I ended up loosing track of days and time seemed to blur into one long hour. I seemed to end up doing the same thing day in day out and Alex and I hadn't been intimate since before the war.
Zoey was still in the hospital, her shoulder had become infected and she was really ill. Our doctors had been trying to help her as much as they could, but as time went on, her prognosis started to look dire. Zoey was barely keeping any blood down and as such her skin was becoming pale, thin and it stuck to her bones, making her look like a walking skellington, if she could walk. She barely opened her eyes, could just about notice if anyone was in the room and was so close to death that he may as well have been standing next to her.
Alex and Erik had been distraught for days now. Erik had barely eaten and Alex was moping around the castle. Erik hadn't left Zoey's side since we had dragged her from the battle field and into the infirmary.
My siblings were taking being orphans just as hard as I was and it had become hard for us all to be together. They could slightly understand why Alex and I had attacked dad because they knew how the mate connection worked, but when it came to mum, some of them felt that what was happening to Zoey was fair. It was hard for me to keep tensions calm when everyone was angry at everyone else. This extended family needs some severe therapy.
It took us all a few months for the tensions to calm down and once the fighting ceased in the family, Alex and I were able to focus on the Kingdom, which had been a bit neglected since the fight. There had been a few fights that had broken out about the merging of the two Kingdoms, but nothing that wasn't quelled easily. However, in all that time Zoey still hadn't gotten any better and I could sense the worry in Alex that something was going to happen to his mother. I did worry about that too, but I had to run two Kingdoms, which were a little upset about the fact that they were being merged.
I was eye ball deep in paperwork about the merging of two parliaments when Alex came rushing into my office. He looked tired, dark circles were under his eyes and he was swaying on his feet from lack of sleep. I looked up at Alex and he burst into tears.
"Oh no baby, what happened?" I asked as I came over to Alex as he fell to his knees and cried out.
"It's mum...they don't think she's going to make it." Alex bawled into him hands and when he looked up at me, his eyes were bloodshot and tears were all over his cheeks.
"I'm so sorry, my love." I soothed Alex because I knew how much he loves his mother and I hated that there was nothing that I could do. I had brought in the best doctors that I could and paid for the most expensive treatments, but it seemed that Zoey's body had been put through a lot.
"I don't want her to die."
"I don't either, my love, but her body has been put through an awful lot and this infection may have caused a lot of damage." I stroked Alex's back and he cried into my shoulder. I hated to see him this way and I hated that there was nothing that I could do to help him.
"I need...I need to get back to her..." Alex sniffled and I helped him to his feet before walking him back to his mother's room, but when we turned up there was a lot of activity going on. There was a lot of beeping and monitors going off. It seemed that we were too late.
Doctors were trying to do all that they could and save her, but it seemed that they were running out of ideas. Erik was yelling in the corner and begging for Zoey to live. He had tears in his eyes and he looked distraught. The doctors were injecting Zoey with everything that they could, doing everything they could and try to get her to wake up, but with one last futile push of Zoey's chest, the doctors gave up.
"NO!" Erik screamed and collapsed to the floor. The doctors turned off the monitors and pulled out the tubes. Erik crawled over to his wife and held her hand, begging her to wake up and crying hot, fresh tears. It was horrific and heart breaking to see. I couldn't imagine the hurt and pain he was feeling about losing his mate. It looked heart wrenching and horrific.
Alex was crying beside me and I had a few tears in my eyes too, but I didn't know what to do or what to say. Alex went over to his father and hugged his dad, who cried into his son's shoulder. The Doctors cleaned Zoey up and they covered her up to her neck with a blanket. She looked peaceful for the first time in months without all those tubes, wires and machines hooked up to her. I went over to her and stroked her face. She had already gone stone cold.
"Rest now, everything will be okay." I whispered to her before planting a chaste kiss on her forehead. I turned to the doctors and asked them to give Erik and Alex a sedative to help them calm down. I had another state funeral to plan.
