The second I opened my eyes I was blinded by the mid-day sun shining through my window.
Of course last night, or this morning when me and mum arrived, it was already dark outside so I hadn't given a second thought to close the curtains that the cleaner had opened yesterday.
No so now I sat squinting around my room, trying to remember where I was and why I was here. Then everything clicked into place.
I was home.
I heard a knock on the door and some sounds of metal hitting the floor and figured that the removal men must be here with out shipped luggage.
I decided that I should help out so I got out of bed and put my slippers on.
As I made my way downstairs, I put my hair into a messy bun with the hair band on my wrist to keep my brown mess of morning hair out of my face.
I heard the radio on in the kitchen and walked in to discover a frying pan left unattended on the stove, the bacon burning to a crisp.
Suddenly there was a spark and the bacon caught fire.
"Shit." I gasp while running to dampen a cloth and put it over the burning pan. Once I managed to put the small fire out, mum walked back into the room.
She groaned at the sight. "Oh crap. I'm sorry Mads. I was making you breakfast in bed-"
"Mum." I try to interrupt her but she didn't seem to be hearing me.
"-and then the removal men arrived and I got distracted and forgot about the pan and I left the kitchen and-"
"Mum!" I yelled, cutting her off during her mid sentence babbling and putting the kettle on to boil. "It's okay, I sorted it. Now sit down and I'll pour you a cup of coffee while you calm yourself down. Have you taken your meds yet?" She nodded as I handed her a cup of the steaming black liquid just how she likes it.
"Good. Now I'll go sort the delivery men out and help them bring in the rest of our things. You stay in here and I'll call for you if we need any help, okay?" She nodded again and I turned towards the door.
"Maddie?" I turned back to her, waiting for her to continue. "Thank you." I smiled, understanding the underlying meaning of her gratefulness. "Oh, and maybe you should put a jumper on."
I glanced down at my attire. I was wearing thermal pj bottoms and a vest top with holes in. "Yeah, I will."
I walked along the hall to where we dumped the bags last night, I opened the one's with some of my clothes in. I picked out some joggers and a hoodie before putting my converse on my feet and running out to help the men.
"Is there anything for me to do to help?" I asked the closest delivery man. He looked about forty, was on the large side and was slightly balding but he had a kind smile on his face which was welcoming.
"Yes dear. You can take the suitcases in if you want?" He said. His voice was croaky, like he had a saw throat.
I nodded before lifting the nearest purple case and carrying it into the house.
I came back out when I was done. "I'm Madison." I told the man, holding a hand out to shake.
"I'm Jeff. He's Malcolm and the one with red hair is Peter." Jeff explained. I waved at each of them as he introduced them and they waved back. They seem friendly enough.
At least I didn't get stuck with a bunch of assholes.
~
Once me, Jeff, Malcolm, Peter and eventually mum once she had calmed down, had finished bringing the rest of the things into the house, me and mim waved them off and I started carrying my stuff up to my room.
