As i push open the front door to my house, first noise to reach my ears was a high pitched screaming noise; one of terror, coming from the kitchen. I recognised the voice instantly, it was my mum's.
"Mum!" I shout alarmed as i run towards the kitchen. "Mum! What's wrong?"
"Maddie, in here! Quick, help me!" Mum's voice shouted, fear dripping her every word.
I reached the kitchen and saw mum perched on the tabletop, her knees to her chest, and tears sliding down her face. She was pointing to something on the floor. I followed her gaze and my eyes met something that to me, wasn't scary in the slightest. To mum on the other hand...
I rolled my eyes and walked towards the little black thing trying to scramble away from me and mum. Probably trying to get away from the noise, no doubt. "Mum, it's not scary. it's just a kitten," I told her softly. "It won't hurt you."
"Yes it will." She said, accusingly. "I've seen it before, it can hurt me."
To anybody else, her ramblings might sound like just that, ramblings. To me however, i understood her fears in detail. Every single one of them.
Her fear of cats? Her mum, my grandmother, told her that black cats were evil, that they would claw your eyes out if you got too close. Backed up by the fact that when she went to pet a black cat in her neighborhood and it sunk its claws into her arm, leaving a scar.
Her fear of spiders? She's not the only one, I'm terrified of them too.
Her fear of the number seven? It came when her older sister got murdered in the bed right next to her while my mum hit in the closet. The date was 07/07/1977.
This type of situation was the reason why we have no pets. My mum is scared of her own shadow half of the time.
"Mum thats nonsense. Its only a little kitten." My voice lowered into little above a whisper as i scooped the little fur ball into my arms and stroked it. I felt the soft vibrations of the cats purring under my hand. "Why was it in our kitchen anyway?" I suddenly ask.
"I don't know. I came in to make myself a cup of tea and it was in the middle of our kitchen." She had calmed herself down, knowing the cat was nowehere near her. "Please take it out Madison." She pleaded.
I looked at my mum in shock. "Of course i won't. It's just a baby mum, it will die!" Her eyes widened.
"No... No way. I'm terrified of cats, you know that. It takes up far too much responsibilty to look after one." My mother began listing the reasons why we shouldn't keep the animal.
I began doing the opposite. "It's freezing outside mum. Wild animals will eat him, he won't stand a chance by himself. Please mum, give us a chance." She gave a weak shake of her head. I fought to keep the smile off my face as i knew she was weakeniing.
"I'll keep him upstairs in my room. I'll train him so he won't scratch you. You know the only reason that cat hurt you was because it was a victim of cruelty. Those kids used to kick it mum, you told me." I explained. "My little Jasper is just a kitten."
"Jasper?" She replied exasperatedly.
I pointed to the fur ball in my arms. Realisation dawned her eyes. "You named him already?"
"Course i did. He's mine right?" I smiled at mum hopefully. She wouldn't say no now. She never could after how i helped her.
Her face softened considerably and she weakly nodded. If i hadn't been staring so intently at her, i would have missed it. I almost dropped Jasper as i ran towards mum and threw my other arm around her. She tensed up.
