"Oh come on!" Russ begs. "No. There's no way I'm getting on that thing I'll die!" I argue. He wants me to go on a roller coaster with him. There's no way I'm getting on a roller coaster I hate them. "Come on! You'll love it! Have I ever steered you wrong?" he asked. "Well there was the time where you almost got me hit by a truck." I said. "Ok so telling you to ride your bike in the street because the sidewalk was closed wasn't a perfect idea. But you're still alive right? That's gotta count for something." he said. "No actually I died and I've been a ghost ever since." I say, following it up with fake ghost sounds and waving my hands and fingers in front of his face. He couldn't help but laugh. "Alright well ghosts can't die so let's go." he smiles and pulls me towards the roller coaster. I gulp. "Uh, this ghost can. So, that's a no." Russ starts to laugh at what I said. "Come on, kid. I won't let anything happen to you. Just trust me." he starts dragging me towards the roller coaster. "Russ, come on. Why do I gotta do this?" I whine. "'Cause. You gotta face your fears." he said as we wind through the guardrails. There's almost no line, so we get on quickly. The ride workers soon have us strapped in. Russ looks at me. "No going back now." he smiled. I think I can tell I'm nervous. He holds out his hand. I grab it and he smiles. The ride starts, with a steep, slow climb up a hill that feels more like a mountain. Once we get to the top, it must've been ten minutes. We sat there for what seems like another two, staring over the tops of the trees, the rest of the park, the parking lot, I even think I see the earth curving. We suddenly shoot down the hill at unearthly speeds, a sharp, almost straight decline. There are several smaller hills right after that. Then we go into a corkscrew, and then a giant loop. By this time, I'm halfway out of my seat. This is why I don't like roller coasters, I always think I'm going to fall out of my seat when I go upside down, and now I am. Russ looks over at me, horrified.
The ride is finally over, and I sink back into my seat. "See? Do you see why I don't like these things?" I yell once we get off of the ride. "Yeah, yeah. I didn't think that was gonna happen. I'm sorry, okay?" "Okay. It was actually fun until I almost, you know, died." I laugh. He smiles. "Only you would joke about that after it happened to you." he walked over to the next ride. Another roller coaster. "Wanna go on?" he asks. "Ha, haha, ha. No!" I answer. "Don't be a baby." he can't resist making fun of me. He's got that older brother instinct that just forces him to crack jokes out of habit. I've always liked that about him, because even though sometimes the jokes were directed towards me, most of the time they're directed towards our enemies.
We wander around the park for a little while, before he turns and faces me. His hair is wet, his lips are blue, skin is pale, eyes cold and soulless, and he feels cold, so cold. He starts to speak, his voice a croak. "Listen, you gotta be careful who you talk to and who you trust. I'm not sure who's in on it but it could be anyone. Trust me. I just may be the only person you can trust now. Be careful, keep your guard up. Something bad is about to happen I can feel it. I love you." he starts to fade. "I love you too. Wait, in on what? What's going on? Russ please tell me! Russ!" I plead and plead, but he's gone. I sink to my knees. "I trust you." I whisper.
I can't have one memory. That was a great part of my childhood, one of my favorite memories, and I can't even have that anymore. Whoever murdered my brother is going to pay. They're not only ended his life but they're ruining mine. I'm going to find them if it's the last thing I ever do. That's a promise. I will find whoever it is, they'll get locked away for good, and I'll watch. And everyday I'll know exactly who to hate. I'll know who ruined my life and stole my brother from me. I'll know and I'll never forget. Whoever killed him better watch their back. I'm coming for them.
