Chapter 28

Everyone - including both Alice and Garrett, I'm sure - was in at least a slight state of shock.
I think that Daniel was probably having a heart attack, due to what he was witnessing right now.

Nothing happens for a long time, but nobody notices. Alice and Garrett are too occupied with their eye contact to acknowledge anyone else as Daniel and I make our own as we exchange weird glances.

"Alice..." Daniel says in a low, half questioning tone. He wanted to grab her attention, but she is too fixated on the surprise she is evidently feeling right now.

"For fuck sake, Garrett. If you are going to tell me right now that you are mated to my sister, I may legitimately have a mental breakdown right here and now." He then says, seeing no reaction from Alice and trying her supposedly new mate.

"Garrett? Alice?" I ask, not too sure how to react to this. We also needed confirmation that our assumptions were correct, because this whole thing could just be a misunderstanding.

Alice nods, turning her head to face me for a split second.

"I don't understand..." She then trails off, not leaving her eyes off of her mate's. Meanwhile Garrett walks towards her, holding his hand out.

I watch as she places is in his hand, and both of their glances turn from looking at their entwined hands, sharply to one another's faces again. It was a reaction from the effect of the touch they shared.

"A second chance mate..." I whisper, more to myself than anyone else but it gains everyone's attention, so I continue. "You were right, Garrett. Holly was your mate, that's why you're only now finding out about this."

I didn't want to say out loud that Alice and Garrett have met previously, because Daniel didn't know that Alice came looking for me and actually succeeded back when I ran away. I did know for a fact however, that him and her made eye contact previously and nothing happened. Before I was confused, but now it all made sense.

"Could you give us some time alone, please?" Asks us Garrett, as Alice was in almost a trance. She was now more responsive, but any chance she got, she looked back at her mate.

"Sure." I answer a little awkwardly, as I grab Daniel's hand on my way out to get him out of here.

As soon as the door shuts behind us, we exchange looks again. We were both probably thinking the same thing.

"What the fuck?" Or maybe not. "What the hell just happened..." Daniel adds, walking away from the door.

"They just found out they're mates, Daniel." I answer, bluntly even though his question was rhetorical.

"Out of everyone, why him? And why now?" He rants to himself, not expecting any answers to all of those questions.

"You sound like an overprotective father. She's an adult, she'll be fine." I roll my eyes.

"Garrett Jackson. Out of everyone, Garrett Jackson..." He continues to curse under his breath. "Now our plan is being delayed."

"Daniel, this will ensure the plan will work." I point out, trying to calm him down. "Garrett will definitely move onto our side now, if his mate is related to you. It only makes sense."

He stands still for a moment and sighs, massaging his temples. Just when I think I've persuaded him to see the bright side, I'm proven wrong.
