A freeverse poem loosely based on the song "Magic" by Coldplay.

---

A fox of legends

And a mighty dragon.

Many a time the dragon

Tried to eat the fox,

But the fox, always clever,

Escaped from the winged beast.

And then they never saw each other.

Not for a while did they see

The bright orange fur

Or the dark green scales

Of their former enemy.

Former, you ask?

What happened, you ask?

When they were apart,

The dragon began to miss the visitor.

At first, he wanted to have a taste,

But as two seasons passed,

No amount of golden treasure

Could replace that fox.

It was a strange emotion

For that dragon to feel.

He felt lonely.

Meanwhile, the fox found

That even though he traveled

Far and wide, across oceans

And terrible seas,

He ended up in doldrums.

Not in the literal sense alone,

But in his heart as well.

He was far from the dragon

He antagonized seasons ago.

Awaiting the ship he stowed away on

To head to shore, he paced the deck,

Thinking and thinking.

The dragon sat in his cave,

Thinking and thinking.

The two were communicating

From an impressive distance.

They both wanted no one else

At their side but each other.

It was a friendship stronger than iron

And purer than gold.

A strange magic attracted them

And made their hearts yearn

For one another. They just

Needed a friend, even though

The dragon had his clan and

The fox his sailor boys.

It was, if one could say,

A match woven in the stars.

But star crossed they weren't;

Instead, they were soul mates.

The fox soon came ashore;

The dragon's spirit lifted

And carried his wings to the forest.

The fox's legs ran mindlessly,

One goal in mind.

In the forest, they collided

Once again, after many moons.

Their lives were fulfilled;

They both felt like they

Had reason to live.

They simply had

Each other.
