Zayne POV

I melt into Luke’s arms as we lay splayed across the too small hospital bed, absorbing his warmth and inhaling his intoxicating smell that I’ve missed so much. I can’t get enough of him especially after the hellish two days that followed the explosion.

When I came to, the destructive power of the bomb destroyed the cliff completely and any surrounding tree within a 10 foot radius. Thankfully, Luke tossed it far enough just seconds before it went off, the force sending me flying back like I weighed nothing and Luke stupidly shielded my body with his. I had scrapes and bruises littered over my body despite my Glamour but they healed seconds later; however, Luke didn’t make it out quite so unscathed.

During the course of my black out he had shifted  back into his human form, his naked body lying on top of mine even after he had lost consciousness looked so...broken. I had never in my life been so vulnerable, so powerless, as I watched his crimson blood stain his sun-kissed skin and his breathing became more and more shallow. I gingerly picked up his broken body and raced through the forest, flinching at every sharp intake he made when I jostled him too much.

I made sure to keep our distance from the clearing where we last saw the rogues and I swore then and there if I was to ever run into those bastards again, I would kill them.Slowly and painfully. But at that moment, Luke was my top priority and I didn’t stop until I got to their pack hospital. I burst through the double doors, most likely looking frantic and half-crazed, yelling for a doctor. A woman that looked slightly like Luke, except she had darker colored hair, had rushed over to me with a gurney and started yelling out orders and people started to move quickly.

I barely let them take him from my sight and when I did, I spent the whole time pacing non-stop.Usually the smell of blood would have drove my kind into a frenzy by then but every carnal instinct that I had was overridden by worry. The doctor was saying something to me at one point but I honestly couldn’t tell over the humming in my ears.

Luke’s heart, the one beating inside my chest, started beating sporadically and then at one point stopped for twenty long excruciating seconds and I felt a hollowness that was both familiar and unwelcomed. I never realized how much I had grown accustomed to the thing but now that I had it, I couldn’t imagine life without it, without him.

Alpha Forrester, his mate and Luke’s little sisters and brother came rushing in and I felt instantly guilty. If it wasn’t for me, he wouldn’t have… I told them what happened, from the moment we heard the howl to the moment I woke up surrounded by destruction and Luke’s tattered body. By the end, everyone was in tears; the Alpha was supporting his wife’s entire shivering frame and the twin girls and the little boy were snivelling around their parents legs. I just felt numb.

It wasn’t until Mrs. Forrester came up to me with tears in her eyes and grabbed my upper arms tightly and shook me slightly. “Thank you,” she whispered with a smile on her face.

I stood there for a few minutes, not really sure I had heard her correctly until she wiped my face and withdrew a shiny liquid drop. I looked at it quizzically finally realizing seconds later that it was a tear. A tear from my eyes. I had pulled away sharply and pawed my face in embarrassment. “I’m sorry. This isn’t like me. I’m not a crier. At all,” I ramble.

In response, she just reached up and grabbed my hands, stopping my frantic movements and squeezed them tightly. “You’ve been crying these pretty metallic tears since we came in. And the puffiness and redness under your eyes tells me that you’ve been doing it for quite some time,” she smiles sweetly. “You and Luke must be really close. Thank you for taking care of my baby.”
