These days, it seems like dating is plagued with sin, like sexual immorality (having sex outside of marriage, to be exact), lust, and idolatry. It even includes emotional consequences such as heartbreak. How do you avoid all of this temptation while dating?
Answer: You can't avoid temptation.
Good news is, God ALWAYS provides a way out of temptation:
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide with it the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."
-1 Corinthians 10: 13
However, to lessen the amount of temptation you may face while dating, here's a list of guidelines to follow.
1. Don't date a guy who isn't a Christian.
"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
-2 Corinthians 6: 14
2. Get to know the person you want to date or are dating.
"Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way."
-Proverbs 19: 2
3. Guard your heart.
"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life."
Proverbs 4: 23 (A verse I've already mentioned, but it still pertains)
4. Save sex for marriage (I'll have a chapter about that later)
"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and the adulterous."
-Hebrews 13: 4
5. Be respectable and respectful.
"Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall."
-Proverbs 28: 18
6. Have an accountability partner or a chaperone.
"Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
-Hebrews 10: 24-25
7. Pray often.
"Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
-Matthew 14: 38
In short, God gives us an array of tools to flee from temptation.
