Ember's POV

"Luke's operation has been scheduled for this Monday." The nurse finally uttered the prolonged words.

"Are you actually serious?" I said it a bland sarcastic tone. She just stared at me. Calum wrapped his arm around my shoulder and squeezed me but I shrugged him off. "No, seriously you can't push it forward, Doctors shouldn't get weekends off, Luke's dying isn't he?" I'd had enough of their denial. "I can tell but your smile the way you look at me with your fake sympathy, I have known them for a while and it feels like i have been waiting for Luke longer than I have even known him." I stormed off in the direction where Luke was.

"Ember, calm down!" Calum grabbed my arm, spun me round and held my elbows. "Ember, let the nurse explain."

"No, Calum I can't. I have had enough, I think I have been through more with all of you then I have been my whole life. I'm not strong enough to do this anymore. I don't have Maya, I don't have Luke, you guys are here and I'm sorry it isn't enough..."

(Calum's POV)

I pressed my finger to Ember's lips and tears escaped her eyes. I wrapped her up and let her cry into my shirt. I looked back up at the nurse who was talking to Ashton and Michael. Ashton gestured to me with a shake of his hand that I take Ember outside and so I did. I took her out to our car which she thankfully got into without reluctance. I think she had finally lost it. And to be honest I don't blame her. I silently hoped that the news Ashton was being given wasn't the end, she was right when she had said she'd been through more with us than her whole life. And she was so strong, so now I didn't know what to do for her. When we had only just met at the music festival and that guy attacked her, I hadn't seen such strength before, she'd broken down a little but she wanted to stay in Lorne. If that had happened to me I would have left in a heartbeat. We hadn't told the fans that Luke was in hospital, we knew that as much as they would have sympathy for us, they would hate on the girls to somehow being the problem. All of these thoughts drew themselves in an endless squiggle as we finally reached home.

I'm pretty sure Ember hadn't realised that she wasn't at the hospital anymore. I brought her inside, stumbling a few times a brand her to her bedroom and sat next to her as she lay down on the bed.

"Em, does May know about Luke?"

"No. I don't want her to know yet it's been to much for her lately."

"Em, I really think you should tell her before she comes up. She needs to know and you need her to know. You seriously need someone to talk to."

"I'm talking to you. Yes but it's different, May knows you a lot better than I do and you need someone who's close to talk to you. Honestly Ember I'm worried about you..."

"Calum, what did the doctor say to Ashton?" she spoke up. Really I didn't know what she had said but I didn't think it was good.

"I don't know, I'll call Ash now." I stood up to leave so I could call him but she grabbed my arm.

"Thank you Cal." She said it as if she was dying, like those last goodbyes in the hospital bed, when they know they will die soon and want to tell you more but that's all they can say. They are so weak, and their eyes close and never open again to tell you the rest. But she continued. "You have done so much for me in such a short amount of time that I have known you. I will never forget the time, the first week, when you saved me from that man, you remember?" I nodded. "Cal, if Luke doesn't make it..."

Her phone buzzed next to her. She quickly reached over and answered. I left the room for her to talk and headed down to the dining table, where I had left my own phone.

"Hey Cal." Ashton's cheery voice buzzed through.

"Why are you so happy?"

"Well, the nurse had gone but then she came back with good news, I tried to call Em but it went to message."

"She's on her phone, what was the news?"

"Luke's operation got moved forward. When you took Ember home, she had made a mistake."

"Oh Thank God, Em would have gone mental in the next few hours. I better go tell her."

"Yep, seeya." I quickly chucked my phone on the couch and raced up to Ember.

"EMBER! EMBER!" I yelled running through the door.

She gave me a confused look and edged herself away from me.

"No, its good news, Luke's operation has been moved forward!"

She gasped and whispered "That's amazing, I don't think I could have seen the nurse or doctor again without hurting someone. But I guess I am over-reacting, he's going to be fine right?" She wasn't just asking me she was comforting herself.

"I'm sure he'll pull through, who was on the phone?"

"May."

"Oh cool, did you tell her about Luke?"

She looked down at her hands.

"Ember." I said slightly annoyed.

"I couldn't she sounded upset again! But she is coming on the plane tomorrow! I can tell her at the airport."

"Okay, but make sure you do. Now, get some sleep, you need it."

"I'll try. Thanks Cal."

"What for?"

"Keeping me sane." I smiled and closed the door.
