(Gracie’s POV)
I wasn’t quite sure why I was in this classroom. Personally, I wanted to go back outside, but Cody had insisted. Now this lady wanted me to sing. The whole thing seemed silly but maybe if I got it over with I could go play some more? So, I opened my mouth, closed my eyes and sang.
The music was slow and pretty and as I sang I found I could completely think about other things as I did so. As the song ended I took a deep breath and opened my eyes. The teacher was sobbing quietly while Cody just stared in disbelief.
"What?" I asked shyly staring from the floor to Cody who stood with his mouth hanging open. Had I done something wrong?
"That was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard." The teacher sobbed in the background but I didn’t pay attention. Cody's blue eyes were locked on mine, shining with a feeling I couldn’t recognize. "Again!" The teacher demanded once more and this time I broke my gaze away from Cody's entrancing eyes.
"Again?" I squeaked in confusion. She nodded eagerly. "I don’t know..." I trailed off.
"Actually, Gracie has other classes she needs to attend. Thank you." With a wave of his hand I scampered over to him and he laid a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it comfortingly.
The teacher nearly screamed in desperation when we were out the door but I didn’t pay attention. I wasn’t concerned with her. Besides, I wasn’t even that good, she was probably overreacting. Cody led me down the hall until we reached an empty courtyard easily bigger than a football field with pillars surrounding it. He leaned against one, not removing his arm, and glanced up at the sky. I on the other hand focused on his face, which looked so deep in thought I didn’t dare disturb him.
Instead I cuddled my face into his shirt, inhaling his comforting smell and sat for a long while, both of us quiet. When I removed my head I found him staring down at me with a tenderness I had never seen before. "What?" I murmured.
His hand stroked my cheek for a moment as he looked at the sky and then he glanced down at me. "That really was beautiful, Gracie. I mean that, and I have heard many beautiful things in my lifetime." He fell silent, staring off again.
"How old are you?" I asked, my sky blue eyes questioning.
A smile crossed his face. "Very old, little angel."
"How old?" I demanded somehow managing to pout in the process
Now he laughed and looked down at me. "I’m 51." I gaped at him in sheer amazement which made him laugh again. "I know I don’t look like it. Demons age differently than humans and other creatures. I age three times slower than the average human. Do I need to go on?"
I shook my head. "Not really. What class do I have next anyway?" His eyes turned sorrowful for a split second before the glimmered with laughter.
"P.E. " When he said it I made a disgusted face.” I take it you don’t like Gym?"
"Uh no!" I nearly shrieked at him and sat on the ground pouting.
"Don’t worry, my friend’s teaching you. You'll have fun."
"Will not." I snorted and glared at him.
"Someone talking about me?" A voice echoed from around the corner. A fellow teenager leaned against an opposing pillar, a smirk on his face. His hair was a shocking silver and his eyes were the color of sapphires. "'Sup Cody." He greeted and then they did that weird man hug thing which I puzzled over seconds later.
"Gracie, this is Leo. He’s going to teach you."
"It’s a pleasure. You even look like an Angel." Leo winked and but I only beamed, glad I that I didn’t look like anything else.
