Hunter was gone when I woke up the next morning. I glance around in a slight daze and my eyes fell to the note beside me on my pillow.
"Whistle or call for your maids when you’re ready to leave the room. I'm afraid there are only a few safe places left for you in the castle for half our guests are arriving today. The wedding is in a week, in case you were curious.
-Hunter"
I stared blankly at the note before crumbling it up and throwing it against the wall in a fit, my sobs coming out rapidly. I don’t want to marry him! This isn't fair! Looking for a place to escape to I launched myself at the door and threw it open. Off balance now I fell to the floor in shock, my head narrowly missing an ill-placed and expensive looking trunk.
Egan smiled at me from the other side of the doorway. "Oh there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you darling! Why are you hiding out in here? With no little Demon for protection? That’s quite dangerous you know." He tried to step forward but the doorway shimmered a little and he was rebounded back out into the hall. With a frustrated but somewhat puzzled glare he reached out a hand and reached into the room.
It bounced off harmlessly.
Slowly, my heart rate slowed and I grinned. He can't get me! "Shut up!" He growled. I saw his incisors lengthen as he sneered at me; His eyes turned red. "Get your ass out here! I’m hungry!" Shaking my head I backed away, further into the room. I suddenly took in his appearance, shocking myself that I hadn’t noticed sooner. His hair was unkempt and messy, but not in a good way and his eyes were almost… bloodshot? Is that possible for a Vampire? Now that my focus was on his eyes I… couldn’t… stop staring. "Come." He whispered.
My hands began to move first and then my legs; I was crawling to the door. All I could see was his red eyes. Such odd… eyes… I couldn’t think straight, not even to shake my head to clear it. Not really. Two more feet and I would be out the door.
A loud snarling suddenly broke out and Egan was thrown away from the door. Celina entered the room and bundled me up from the floor and away from the door. Now aware of what was happening again, I shuddered into her and she patted my back reassuringly. I was half shocked that Celina wasn't out there beating the crap out of Egan, but instead the light and bubbly Hailey. She entered after Egan was gone, once more her bright cheerful self. "Miss Gracie! Why didn’t you whistle?"
"I didn't think." I mumbled glancing away. I was ashamed of myself.
"No matter. He would have found you anyway. That Angel bloodlust does scary things to a vampire." I realized suddenly that she was right; Egan had taken a taste of me before, from my finger. I gave another shudder. “There, there. He’s gone now. Hunter will deal with him appropriately.” Celina reassured me and the two of them helped me dress in a white skirt and matching top. "Now, where would you like to spend the day?" When I raised my eyebrows at her she elaborated. "The palace isn't safe anymore. We have to stay in one room. It's safer."
"Oh.... Well what choices do I have?"
Haley thought a minute. "Well there’s the library, the arcade, the green house... and that’s it." She smiled sheepishly.
