My eyes narrowed into a glare and I stepped forward, getting directly into his face. "What do you mean, Gracie's in danger?" I growled.
"Calm down, Cody. Not from me." Jenkins assured me, I shook my head and turned around to find Gracie directly behind me. She held her arms out to me like a child waiting to be picked up. I obliged and cradled her close, my whole body less tense. Gracie turned her head sideways to watch the doctor with a mix between a child's curiosity and an adult's worry.
"Then who?" My voice was a bit rougher than usual.
The doctor sighed. "Hunter." I tensed all over again and waited for him to explain. "Angel blood is ten times more tempting then even the most appetizing human. Once you've had a taste it consumes your taste buds until it’s all you will drink. Especially, if the angel is female and untainted. Cody, Hunter had more than a taste." Jenkins said gently; I still panicked.
"He’s going to come after her?" I whispered in terror.
"Not if he gets some of her blood first..." He trailed off until he saw the look of understanding on my face.
"How much are you going to need?" My eyes trailed down to Gracie's soft curls.
He shifted his feet, not looking directly at me. "Well there will have to be regular blood donations. Gracie will have to give some blood each day. We should be able to keep Hunter under control if he has a steady supply. If we mix it with normal blood then he'll get the food he needs to remain... sane."
I sighed and shifted Gracie to my other hip. It was surprisingly easy considering how small and light she was. "How much do you need now?"
Now he swallowed rather nervously. "Um, well about that... I'll have to take a lot. She'll pass out from blood loss but if we give her some of your blood, she should be just fine. How about it?"
"We don't really have a choice do we?" I let out a shaky breath before I set Gracie gently on my bed and I crouched down to her level. "Honey, the doctor has to take some blood from you okay?''
Gracie's eyes widened and shook her head fearfully. "I don't want to!"
"Please Gracie? It won’t hurt I promise." I picked up her hand and held hers between mine. She still shook her head. I look back at the doctor.
"Maybe if you go first? I need some blood from you anyway."
Hm...That could work. I nodded to him and rolled up my sleeve looking away to Gracie. "Nothing to be scared of see?" I tried not to flinch as the needle went into my arm. She tilted her head to the side, watching me for my reaction. I showed no emotion that was related to pain on my features. Instead I smiled softly. The angel blinked in astonishment while I nearly laughed out loud at her baffled expression. Angels were so much fun.
"Ok Gracie, It's your turn." Dr. Jenkins said kindly. Gracie lifted her chin slightly and put on a brave face. It almost looked like she was trying to imitate me.
