There was something that I recognized in the new student’s walking style. Model. Was he a model? He walked like one. He sat behind us. I just focused my eyes on the hundred pages book in front of me, not that I was listening. I barely listened to what Mr. Everett was saying. Only few words that caught my attention it were, next week would be our practical test, and guess what we should do? Dissect a frog. Great! The cramping in my stomach got worse. I collapsed on the last practical test which was dissecting a gold fish, and now frog? Oh god, I’m going to die. I thought. I started to think for thousands of excuses to say for next week.
The bell rang, indicating it was the end for Biology class and time for Computer class, my favorite.
“Let’s go.”
I nodded, grabbing my books—that was when I realized it wasn’t Melly’s voice. It was a boy voice. I gulped and looked beside me. There he was standing. With a wide grin on his face, he extended his hand toward me.”Emm.” He introduced himself.
Melly whispered into my ear.”He kept calling you, but you didn’t even look at him.”
Oh god. What I have done? I cursed myself. I didn’t even hear him, it was because my mind wasn’t here.”Sorry. I was busy listening to what he said.” Lies escaped naturally from my lips. “Tabitha..you can call me Tabby.” I took his offer for a hand shake. His hand was cold, and I recognize one thing, it was a slight cut in his right arm.
“Cute name.” He said chuckling.
“Alright. Let’s go.”Now, it was Melly’s voice.
We left our class. I didn’t even look at Matt while we were walking out of the class. Our computer lab was in fifth floor. There was an elevator, but it’d crowded so we decided to just use stairs. Emm and Melly were getting closer. They kept talking about this and that, the topic kept flowing. And I was just there walking beside her, like a mummy.
Soon as we reached the computer lab, Melly walked toward her table. The seat was assigned according to the alphabet; this was the first class I didn’t sit near her. I walked toward my table on the last row. Emm followed me and sat next to me. He was the new student so the teacher decided to sit him on the last row. I smiled weakly at him and then set my eyes back on the computer screen. We were learning about Photoshop. It was quiet interesting. Computer was the only subject I couldn’t find any difficulty at. I love everything about technology. I could understand and finish the assignment quickly, and then for the rest of the class, I would be watching people, it was my routine and it was about to change. Emm finished the assignment same as me, I didn’t recognized that.
“Are you always this quiet?” He asked me in a low tone so no one could hear it except me.
“Eh?” I looked at him, surprised, not by what he asked, but because he actually asked me that. Yes. I never talked to anyone except Melly and of course Matt and Alex were on the list long time ago. “You could say so.” I chuckled—awkwardly.”No one talk to me except Melly.” I shrugged.
“I just did.” He replied instantly.
I gulped, my eyes widened in disbelieve. “Er..” I stammered in finding the right words.”I—I’m sorry.” I whispered lowly.
Emm laughed, his voice was so clear like crystal.”Don’t be. I do understand it.”
I replied him with a smile. Time passed by so quickly. The class ended up so quickly. It was time for lunch. I brought my lunch so did Melly, but Emm didn’t, so we decided to have lunch together near the pond. We got out quickly. It was really a quiet and nice place. A fish pond was beneath us, with a maple tree surrounded us. The place was more for privacy. I had been here a lot for last year.
It was a fun lunch. Emm talked about himself, mostly Melly asked him and I was there just to listen. I was right. Emm was model. He moved here with his family a month ago. He had a sister, Anne. She was studying with us, first year. And he told me one last thing that really caught my attention. He adopted a baby. How old was he? Seventeen? Eighteen? and he already adopted a baby. I couldn’t even believe it. Secretly, I adored him. He showed us the photo of the baby boy. Emm named him Brayden. Brayden was about four months old. He was so chubby and cute. Emm invited us to his house sometime to play with Brayden. And we talked about so many things. Emm was really friendly and such a nice guy.
That was how the rest of my day ended, it ended pretty well than I was expecting.I couldn’t believe I actually made it. He waved goodbye at me at the parking lot. He brought his car. He offered us a ride, but we declined it. I walked home with Melly, like usual.
”I told you, it’s going to be okay, right.” Melly said as we walked away from the school. Our home wasn’t that far. Melly lived few blocks from me.
I knew who she was talking about. Matt. I smiled and nodded. Honestly, I didn't get a feeling that this would get any better. Obviously he had been ignoring me for the whole day. I sighed quietly on that thought. Suddenly a black Benz stopped in front of us. I was familiar with that car, but the thought of the owner made me froze. No. It can’t be him behind the dark silhouette, I thought at the same time as he opened the passenger door.
“Get inside.” Matt ordered while looking straight to the road.
