I tiptoed to get to my desk. Everybody was already there. Kyoto-sensei, our vice principal, seemed to be upset at something. He was reprimanding one of the club advisers. I didn't know what he was talking about but it seemed to be very serious. I thought I was able to make it quietly to my desk without getting his attention but as soon as I was able to sit, he yelled, calling my name. I closed my eyes. A little scared. What is it this time?
"Hai. Ohayoo gozaimasu," was all I could say to him. I could feel everybody's eyes on me now. I looked at my watch. It was only about 6:45 in the morning. I thought I was pretty early. Did I forget some faculty meeting or something?
"Oh, my God," was my instant reaction when I heard the news. Hiroki, Naoki's fraternal twin, got involved in a gang fight that weekend. He landed in a hospital. His big brother, their guardian, informed Kyoto-sensei that his brother will be absent for at least a week. But he will be in school that morning to talk to somebody who was teaching the boys how to play the guitar. And that was me!
Kyoto-sensei demanded an explanation. Why the hell did I encourage the kids to play the guitar? What's the connection, I asked. That was the reason why the kid got in trouble with the other kids. Playing the guitar?
Hiroki and his band members were performing on the street when some kids from a rival junior high school hurled insults to them and asked the group to stop playing. Hot headed that he was, Hiroki challenged the leader of the rival school to a fist fight. That was when the ramble begun.
The messenger came in and handed a note to Kyoto-sensei. Hiroki's brother had just arrived. He was looking for me! Sakamoto-sensei patted me on the back. Giving me some morale support. She offered to go with me. I asked the vice principal if it was okay but he flatly refused. The brother wanted to see me alone.
I sighed. Okay. Will they fire me for this? It's really difficult to understand them sometimes.
Kyoto-sensei escorted me to the adjacent room where we talk to parents and visitors. Hiroki's brother was there sitting. I couldn't see his face yet. But I knew what to expect. He should be very angry to come to school this early.
My heart was pounding so loudly, I swear, Kyoto-sensei could hear it. He cleared his throat to announce our arrival. The visitor looked to his left and upon seeing us, stood up and went to greet the vice principal.
I muttered oh my God again. It was the train man!
