While doing my laundry today, I remember this Tagalog drama I watched years ago where Carmina Villaroel, the main character in the story, was given a chance to see what her life could have been had she chosen studies over love.
Carmina in the story was a model housewife - always there for her family. Her husband (played by Tonton Gutierrez, if I'm not mistaken), was a jeepney driver, loving and kind but couldn't provide for the family's needs. He was her first love.
Carmina's character had often wondered what life could have been had she listened to her mother...if only she finished her studies...One day, when she went to the church, she met an old lady (played by John Lapuz, I think), who happened to be her fairy godmother. She heard Carmina's secret wish so she was there to grant it. She sold a detergent soap to Carmina and told the latter that once it bubbles she just have to think about the part of her past which she wanted to change and the bubbles will bring her there.
Carmina did not waste any time to use the soap. And she was brought to that time in her past when she was about to elope with Tonton. Instead of eloping with him, she told Tonton that she changed her mind - she wanted to finish her studies first. So he should wait when she's ready.
When she was able to graduate from college, she told Tonton again to wait till she got herself a job. She thought about her previous life with Tonton and how hard it was to make ends meet. She vowed she would never go back to that kind of life. Every time Tonton asked her to marry him, she always had a reason to refuse him.
To make the story short, Carmina got her dream - she became a successful career woman and by the time she was ready to marry her first love, he was no longer there. He married another woman. Carmina soon realized that all the wealth in the world and even those wealthy bachelors courting her cannot make her feel complete.
She thought about her previous life with Tonton. Yes, it was hard. They don't always have delicious food. In fact, they had to let go of other needs just to be able to put food on the table. But then, she was always happy. Yes, her husband was just a jeepney driver. But he was a hard-working one. And he was always good to her and their kids...
She started wishing again...When she saw her fairy godmother in front of the church, she begged her to give her another chance. She wanted her old life back...
Tonton came home from work surprised to see his wife singing while doing a mountain of laundry...She was a reflection of a happy child who was finally allowed to play with bubbles.
I looked at the bubbles on my hands and wished I could have a chance to travel back and forth in life....
