Chapter 8-the stories
“aren’t you that new farm girl?” Nami asked as she took a bite of the vegetables.
“yeah, my dad had the farm since I was born.” I said taking a sip of juice ruby pored for me.
“so why didn’t your dad stay with you in the city?” Nami asked, after she did I heard a thump under the table.
“Nami, we don’t bother ripping the gift until Christmas.” everyone at the table looked at ruby, wondering what she just said, “we don’t talk about what people don’t want to talk about, right now.” ruby said as if Nami was another one of her children.
“oh, its ok, I don’t mind talking about it, my dad would have stayed with me until I was old enough to take care of myself, but when I was 2 he realized he missed his farm and he didn’t like the city life.” I said trying not to sound to bad about it. The rest of the meal was a completely different conversation, ruby took out the second meal, miso soup, and as she went around pouring soup into each bowl.
“this looks and smells really good, ruby.” I said as she poured my soup.
“yeah, my mom makes amazing dish’s she’s famous, around the world!” rock whispered, he was right, it was better then a 5 star restaurants meal.
“my wife, is the best cook ever!” Tim said holding ruby’s hand across the table.
“oh Tim…” ruby said about to finish.
“hey I know good food, when I taste it, and trust me your food is perfect, doesn’t need a thing different.”
“oh Tim, you’ve tried a lot of food, surly you’ve tried a lot of food better then mine.”
“yep…” Tim said agreeing with his wife, he shouldn’t have done that.
“dad…” rock said after I heard another thump under the table.
“because, this beautiful young lady I fell in love with, made me the most perfect pumpkin pie, we met in the city” Tim said starting a story, ruby went from a freaked out face to a face who was surprised.
“here we go again!” Nami said, but everyone ignored her.
“to bad she visiting from a far away island, after she left, I found out she loved me too. So I went to the far away island, a blue feather in my hand, and when I saw her, both she and I didn’t have to say anything, until I pulled out the feather, and the 2 words that changed everything was…” Tim stopped and looked at his wife
“I do.” she finished his sentence.
“that’s how you two met?” I asked as ruby faced her husband and he faced her.
“they tell almost every week.” Nami said with her head in her hand, I can tell she’s negative, about everything.
“I think it romantic.” I said as the couple sat back down.
“oh it is, how my lovely husband followed me all the way back to our small island, leaving his family.” ruby said.
“well that’s good, because that was the plan.” Tim said with a laugh.
“now, what’s this about a blue feather?” I asked. This was new to me, and I usually hear a ring in hand, not a blue feather in hand.
“it’s a tradition here. To propose, you must have blue feather. Instead of a ring. Then, the two that were just married, take the feather to the harvest spring, and place the blue feather in the water. If it floats, your marriage is not destine to be. It sinks, your love with be at the bottom of the pond forever.”
“that’s cool. But, how does it sink, when it suppose to float?”
“the harvest goddess. They say, she figures it all out, and then drags it to the bottom of the lake. Then placing the blue feather, with the harvest spirits.” Tim said, taking a sip of miso.
“or it’s the different patterns of the wind, that happens of different nights. But every one believes a stone goddess, sitting at the bottom of a old pond.” Nami said, but acted as no one heard her.
I must have had a look on my face, as if I was really wondering something.
“the harvest spirits, are 3 very old sprits. They live by the harvest spring, and watch over the people of forget-me-not-valley. Some people think, their super tiny. Others think no one can see them.” rock said, giving me an idea of what the 3 little guys were.
“and some people think, every 100 years, only few people can see them.” Nami said. For once, everyone looked at her, as if she was giving out good information. “what? I’m a reporter. I’ve got to know this stuff.”
I looked at my watch, “oh, I better get home, its almost 8:00pm.” I said getting up.
“well, why don’t you take some pie with you, oh rock told me about your dog, take a bone for him.” ruby said going into the kitchen.
“sure, I’ll have some after lunch tomorrow.” I said as I took a brown paper bag with 2 slices of apple pie, a red dog leash and about 3 bones.
I walked up to my farm, and almost fell over of cuteness when I saw, little skip, at the mat of my door asleep,
“my hero.” I said sarcastically. I went inside, put my doggy bag down on the table, went back outside, picked up skip, and brought him inside. He opened one eye, saw me, and went back to sleep. I relived I should be doing what skip is doing, so I climbed into bed (with skip laying next to me) and fell into a deep sleep, not knowing what else could go on in this town.
