7. His Story

When you realise people actually read your story

Like idk a day or two later

Ness's PoV

It's the day before the tournament starts and Lucas and I have been practising a lot. We battled multiple times, each time Lucas got a little better. He beat me once, actually. I was really proud of him, I could tell he was proud of himself.

He's gotten much less nervous around me, which is good, but I'm sad to see his cute stutter go.
Wait, What?

He's a good roommate. He cleans up after himself and helps me get to sleep when I can't. He still hasn't told me about how he saved the world, though. I'm going to ask him today.

It's after both lunch and practice and we're lying in our room, Lucas's nose in a book.

"Hey, Lucas?" I get his attention.

"Yes?" He answers, not looking up.

"Do you mind telling me about how you saved the world?" To this, he puts a bookmark in his book and closes it. He closes his eyes for a moment.

"Uh... S-Sure thing." He says, stuttering.

"You sure?" I ask him, concerned.

"Yes." He assures me. "I might not be able to tell the whole story, though." He warns.

"That's okay." I tell him. He takes a deep breath before beginning.

"It started the day I was meant to go home from my granddad's house. My..." He goes quiet and closes his eyes, taking a breath.

"My mum and my brother, Claus."

The words inserted themselves into my mind, me not getting a choice to hear them or not. Lucas continued.

"My family went to visit him for a few days. On the day we walked home, a Drago attacked us. It flung..." He breathed again. "It flung my brother and I into the water. We washed ashore later that day. We learned that... The Drago we saw... Mum..." The blonde was clearly on the verge of tears.

"You can stop now. Don't worry." I say, concerned for my friend.

He nods shakily and looks down. I quietly stand and sit beside him, almost putting my hand on his shoulder. My hand hovers just above it for a moment, before lowering into his shoulder. He smiles and leans on my shoulder.

"Th-thank you, Ness." Lucas says, sounding sad. He was fighting back tears, Ness could tell.

"Can I help at all?" I ask him. He quickly shakes his head.

"Th-This is fine." He says, giving me a hug. "Thank you for being my friend."

I smile and look at him, laying on my shoulder, his arms around my stomach.

"It's my pleasure." I say, returning the hug.
