18. The Wait

I make sure to take a lot of pictures with Lucas before I go home. We have at least five for every room. I keep one very special one in my baseball cap. I have my arm around Lucas's shoulder and we're smiling, his eyes closed. It makes me feel happy whenever I look at it.

But I'm home now, which means I won't be able to see Lucas for a long time. I sigh. Maybe I can go see Jeff. Maybe he'll know what to do.

I stand on the footpath of the main road, getting ready to use PSI teleport. I stretch and then begin running, making sure to shout "PSI Teleport" after I go as fast as I can. I skid to a halt out the front of Doctor Andonuts Lab. I guess I want to go here instead. I know what it is.

"Andonuts!" I knock on the cold, metal front door. "There's something I need! Open up!"

The door opens and Dr Andonuts is standing in its absence.

"Ness? What is it you need?"

"Do you still have that time machine thing?"

"Phase Distorter? Of course I do. It's just, eh..." Dr Andonuts doesn't finish his sentence.

"What happened?" I ask suspiciously.

"Nothing too bad, it just, uh..." He draws back a curtain to reveal a scattered bunch of debris. "Exploded?"

"Okay, that's okay." I say, frustration clearly showing in my voice.

"... Why do you want it?" He asks after a moment.

I feel my face flush red. "N-No reason." I say with a chuckle. "I, uh... Gotta go. Seeyas later." I quickly leave the lab and begin running. "PSI Teleport." I whisper, running in circles.

I want to see Lucas, the only way I'm gonna be able to see him is if I travel through time or if I wait for the next smash tournament. But that could take years. I'm not prepared to wait that long.

I realise I've finished teleporting when I hit my face on a fence. I take my hat off and shake the soot off of it. The picture falls out and lands softly in the snow at my feet. I pick it up and shake it, snow getting flicked everywhere.

I run my thumb down the picture and smile. I put it safely into my hat and shake the soot off of me, opening the gate to Jeff's school. I open the front doors and run up the stairs. I've an idea.

I knock on Jeff's door.
"Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, Jeff!"

He opens it and pulls me inside, closing the door behind me.

"Yes, Ness?" He asks, adjusting his glasses.

"So there's this boy but he's from the future and we met at smash and he likes me and I like him back and we're dating but now we can't see each other but he's from our world just from the future so I'm wondering if you have any theories on how to time travel." I take a deep breath and cough, Jeff patting my back.

"You want to find out how to time travel?" Jeff asks inquisitively.

"You know it." I say with a smile.
