Jimin smiled at the mint colored hair he adored. The prince was giving a speech from his balcony today. Jimin had caught his name once, Suga, if he remembered correctly. He wasn't quite sure, as that sounded odd to be a name. Then again, everyone in the world of the humans had weird names. Suga had a best friend named J Hope. They were hanging out at the beach when Jimin heard Suga call the other boy that.
Everything about humans was weird. They couldn't swim very fast. They also didn't talk the way that Jimin's people did. He didn't mind, though. Someone from his home had taught him how to speak the language of the humans. It was fascinating, their speech patterns. He loved listening to Suga's voice, happy to understand every word, every syllable that came from the boy's lips.
"Jimin, there you are. Dad has been wondering where you were for nearly an hour now." Jimin's younger brother, Jeongguk, said, coming above the surface. Jimin didn't even look back. He simply sighed and leaned against the warm rock he had been hiding behind.
"Jiminie, come on. Dad wants you and he's not willing to wait around all day, you know that better than anyone. Hell, he's probably sending out the Brigade to find us right now." Jeongguk tugged on his brother's hand. Jimin finally pushed off of the rock, still watching Suga as he continued his speech.
Jeongguk was right, of course. He usually was, when he came to things like Jimin's common disappearances. Their father hated when he would disappear, knowing well that his son was above the surface. It was dangerous for anyone to be above the surface, even more so to be as close to the shore as Jimin was.
Jimin looked at his younger brother finally.
"Do we have to go now?" He asked, a whiny edge to his voice. Jeongguk could swear sometimes that they should've been born in a different order. Jimin acted like a child way more than Jeongguk did.
"Yes. Dad will throw a fit if he finds out how close we are to the shore."
"Guk, it's not hurting anything! Really, I'm okay. I'm not bothering any of the humans and they haven't even noticed us."
"Not yet. Jiminie, come on. I'm scared and I want to go back home. What if the humans do see us? It won't end well."
"It'll be worse if Dad finds out how close I come." Jimin muttered, accepting the defeat. Jeongguk reached his hand out, taking his older brother's. He was still a kid really, only sixteen. Jimin wasn't much older, at only seventeen. He wondered how old Suga was sometimes.
"Please take me home." The younger of the two whispered sheepishly. Jimin sighed, shaking his now dry silver locks.
"Alright. Let's go home, Guk." Jimin slowly dipped down below the surface of the water. Jeongguk did the same, still gripping his older brother's hand tightly.
"Jiminie?" He asked as they swam back home.
"Hm?" Jimin hummed, Suga being the only thing really on his mind.
"Why do you go to the surface everyday?" The younger asked, swimming closer. Jimin glanced at him.
"I go to the surface because I want to be like them. I want to be able to walk and feel the sand on feet, not on some stupid tail."
"But you can have whatever you want down here, Jiminie." Jeongguk whispered, stopping. Jimin glanced back before stopping as well.
"Guk, just because Dad is the king doesn't mean we get whatever we want. I don't want to be a- the humans call us mermaids- mermaid. I don't want to be a mermaid. I want to be a human." Jeongguk's eyes began to grow swollen. He was crying, but because tears were made of water, you couldn't tell.
