Livy's POV:
I rubbed my eyes and looked around. Everything was quiet... too quiet. I turned over and looked at Jess, who was sleeping soundly. I wonder what he's dreaming about, I thought.

"Jess?" I whispered. He immediately opened his eyes.

"What?" He whispered back, rubbing his eyes.

"Did Mike wake you up last night?" I asked.

"No." He shook his head.

"Me neither." When I looked around, I realized no one was awake. I threw off my blanket and went to Layla.

"Layla!" I shook her.

"What?" She mumbled. Then she realized we were still at the asylum. She sat straight up. I let out a sigh out relief, Layla was alright, but what about Mike and Matt. I looked to where they were sleeping to see Jess shaking Mike awake. I went to Matt.

"What is it? What happened?" Mike asked.

"Your alive," breathed Jess. "Who did you wake up for the next watch?"

Mike hesitated. "No one... I fell asleep." Mike flinched and looked at Matt. "Did anything happen?" I looked at Matt.

"Matt?" I whispered in his ear. No answer.

"Matt!" I yelled as I shook him. He stirred and opened his eyes.

"What?" He sat up in alarm when he saw my expression. I let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank goodness you're alright," I said. Jess looked at me, puzzled.

"What about the murderer?" He asked.

"What?" I asked. He was confusing me.

"Everyone was sleeping and the murderer didn't attack. That doesn't make any sense." Matt and I stood up. Mike tensed.

"What if the murderer was waiting for us to wake up," he whispered. A shiny object appeared behind him.

"Mike! Watch out!" Matt warned, but he was too late. The dark figure appeared behind Mike and impaled him three quick times before running the opposite direction. Mike grunted in pain before collapsing.

"No!" Layla screamed. Jess, who was standing next to Mike, caught him before he hit the floor. My eyes were tearing up.

"Don't leave," Matt begged, kneeling next to him as Jess laid him down gently. "Please." Mike turned his head toward him.

"M-my fault," Mike sputtered. He lifted his hand and touched his brothers cheek. "Forgive me." Matt started to sob as Mike went limp, blood pooling around his body. Layla went up to Matt and hugged him.

"He died thinking I hated him." Matt sniffed. "I can't do this."

"Do what?" Layla pulled away, wiping tears from her eyes.

"I wish we never came here," he answered. "None of this would have ever happened." I looked at Jess. He was avoiding my eyes.

"Jess?" I asked.

"What?" He said, still avoiding eye contact.

"Should we fight it?" I walked up to him. "We don't want any more deaths."

"That crossed my mind, but this place is haunted, it could be a ghost or restless spirit, seeking for revenge," he said. "That's what Leo said to me on the way to your house, that there could be ghosts or spirits."

"I don't care what it is, I just want to kill it!" Matt shouted. I couldn't help but agree with him.

"Me too," I said, snapping to no one. Everyone flinched at the intensity of my own voice, including me. Jess looked at me in shock.

"We need to stay together," said Layla, recovering. "It seems to be killing us off one by one, so when it comes for one of us, we should fight it."

"Good idea." Jess nodded.

"Just let it take me," said Matt glumly. "I won't be much use anyway." Layla walked up to Matt and slapped him across the face. He looked at her, startled, and rubbed his cheek.

"Pull yourself together! Your brother and our friend just died, and the least you could do is try. It doesn't have to be for you, it can be for your brother, it can be for Jess, or for Livy." She paused and lowered her voice. "It can be for me... "
