The morning sun was beating down hard, Lilli rolled down the window and stuck her head out. "Get back in here! If a car some by its going to chop your head right off" spluttered her mother. "No it won't mum, if your driving right." Lillies mother was a very uptight woman. Her mousy, thin hazel brown hair and her small, dull, dark brown eyes made her look small.  "Sweetheart it's happened before now roll up the window, it's unsafe and dangerous. Besides we are almost at the doctor.

Hastily pulling into a tight space in the crowded parking lot of the symbol specialist office. The day was bright and the sun was hot. Lilli dragged her feet up the cement front steps ignoring the wrought iron railing twisting up alongside her. The exterior was a light indigo color with heavy oak doors and windows every few feet.

Touching the tip of her finger against the edge of the white flower box that hung under the Windows, Lilli pulled open the door and was almost pushed back by the loud volume of voices. A mother dragging her young child by the wrist was almost yelling at the registration clerk. The little girl kept saying " I'm sorry, so so sorry". The mother persisted saying "it didn't look like this yesterday, it was a half an anchor and but now it's half a flower. Whats happening?!". Lilli moved over to the other registration counter and put in her name with the man sitting behind the counter tapping away on a computer and scooting around the small area on a swivel chair. As she turned Lillis mother ushered her to the seat next to her very frantically, " some of these people are going crazy, or are different than us." Lillian had heard stories of people with with no symbol or with two, or two people of the same gender with the same symbol, but she'd never seen it before. But sitting here in the clinic waiting room she saw all the confused, angry, or anxious faces staring back at her.

"Ms Lilli Gleeson, the doctors ready for you" Lilli arose from the hard wooden chair anchored to the wall. Slowly shuffling her feet to the door the assistant questioned "and what seems to be the problem today?" "My symbol, it burns." "Is this frequent?" "It been happening for weeks" "is it constant?" "Always" "alrighty then ms Lilli the doctor will be in in a minute, the news might be a bit shocking." Making no more conversation the doctors assistant pushed them into a small check up room and shut the door. Concerned Lilli looked at her mother who was wringing her pink polished hands. "Am I gonna be ok?" Lilli asked. Her mother did not answer, instead she just looked down, her hair covered her expressionless face.
