STILL 4 YEARS AGO

Kendall’s POV

I drove along the little street looking for my brother’s new house. I looked around, there were no cars and the houses were tiny. I must have been on the wrong street. I pulled up at the side of the road and I got out of my car. I pulled out my phone and dialled my brother.

“Hi Kevin, it’s me. I’m totally lost I can’t find your house…” I started the conversation. It went on for almost twenty minutes.

I walked back up the street towards my car but I was looking at my phone and didn’t see the girl walking towards me. We crashed into each other and without thinking I accidentally snapped at her.

"Watch where you're---" I started to say, but stopped myself quite quickly as I looked at her. Her wavy, blonde hair was about shoulder length, with a few little flicks where she’d been dragging her fingers through it too much. She had red glasses, and hidden behind them were a pair of greyish-blue eyes. They sparkled like little jewels, I couldn’t look away.

"I'm sorry, I should have been looking where I was going... I guess my head was in the clouds." She replied. She swerved past me and continued walking up the street. I looked down and noticed a set of keys on the ground. Attached to the keys was a picture. I guessed the girl in the picture was the girl I’d just bumped into. She must have only been about six or seven. One of her teeth was missing, her hair was all over the place like she was just out of her bed and she was standing beside the biggest toy rabbit I’d ever laid eyes on.

I ran after her, the keys dangling in my hand. I caught up with her and she turned around.

"You dropped these when you bumped into me... " I told her, realising how much I was making it sound like she was at fault. She took the keys and noticed the key ring she had attached to them. Her whole face glowed red.

Oh... thanks." She muttered back, still staring in the shock at the key ring attached to her keys.

She began to walk away again, but I didn’t want her to leave straight away. I walked up behind her and put my hand on her shoulder. Her touch sent electricity through my veins. I decided it would be a good idea to introduce myself. A name is always a handy thing to know.

"I'm Kendall..." I began, stopping quite suddenly again, lost for words to say.

I watched as she unlocked the door.

"Oh hi Kendall, I'm Megan but basically everyone I know calls me Megz." She replied, as she opened the door and stepped inside.

She put her books on the counter and beckoned me inside. I went in, but I was totally shocked. The kitchen was absolutely tiny. All she had was a fridge, a small counter, a sink and a little oven. We really were from two different worlds. My brothers were both quite well known and I was in a band with my best friend, Dustin. Megan’s house was barely big enough for her to live in.

"Wow... you're kitchen is tiny..." I laughed, hoping she wouldn’t be offended. I looked around, totally amazed by how little space she had. I was really touched that she was able to live with so little but seem so happy with what she did have.

She hesitated for a moment. Oh man, I did offend her. I felt so bad, but she shook it off, hopefully realising I wasn’t used to this sort of thing.

"Yeah..." She replied quietly. She looked around again, clearly feeling awkward. Not to brag but my car looked like a space ship beside her house.

There was silence for about a minute. I stood with my hands in my pockets.

I broke the silence.

“Hey, I know we've only just met but do you wanna go down to the beach and just kill a few hours?" I asked her. I wanted to get to know this girl better, and I had a feeling I was going to.

She looked stunned. Apparently she wasn’t commonly asked if she wanted to hang out. She walked over and checked her calendar. I saw an empty page except for something scored out from the day before.

A huge grin spread across her face.

"I guess a few hours wouldn't hurt." She said, still grinning. “Can my friends come too? If that's okay..." She mumbled. I understood why, she was just being careful. After all, I was still a bit of a stranger in a way.

"Yeah course! How about I invite my friends as well?" I answered. I didn’t want to feel awkward being the only guy there.

We both pulled out our phones. Once again I noticed a huge difference. Her phone was quite basic. It was a bit of a brick. I had an iPhone. Oh man, here we go again. I look like a total snob compared to Megan.

I quickly wrote, “Hey, you comin’ down to the beach?” I scrolled through my contacts and found Carlos, Dustin, James and Logan. I didn’t bother telling them that Megan and her friends were coming. They didn’t need to know yet… Especially James.

“I’ll be right back.” Megan told me. She went through a door, I assumed to go and get changed. One by one the guys all replied. Brilliant!! They were in.

After about 5 minutes, Megan came back through. She had on a pair of denim shorts, a cute little pair of strappy sandals and a little top, probably covering swimming gear.

I smiled, as Megan followed me out of her house. She locked the door and I heard her keys landing in her bag. We jumped into my car and started to head to the beach.
