'We can't do this!' I screamed as I avoided another spinder's poison. 'We can't kill them all: there are too many of them!' A powerful swing of a hairy leg pushed me against a thick tree and I thought I heard some of my bones break when I hit the hard wood. I screamed in pain but my scream changed into Legolas's name when another monster sneaked towards him from behind. 'Legolas! Behind you!' I shouted and he turned quickly, chopping off it's head in one smooth movement. But I could see that he grew tired. He breathed heavily and his face was covered in the spider's black blood. When he ran towards me, I could see his left leg moving less smoothly. I discovered the wound on his left knee and saw how the thick red blood dripped from his wound to the ground, leaving a trail as he neared me.
'We can't do this, I agree. We must go.' He said and offered me his hand. I took it and was thankful as he helped me rise. I did not feel well, my back hurt a lot and I blamed the tree for that. But we had to go, wounded or not, we had to leave this place and quickly. With Legolas's hand in mine, we ran away, avoiding the spiders that chased up and climbed in trees to attack us from above. It was difficult, almost impossible, not to get hurt while we fled. We were supposed to be faster, but now we were injured and the pain while running was unbearable. I looked at Legolas who seemed to feel much more agony than I could imagine. He bit his lip so he wouldn't think of the pain that came from his knee and spread through his body. His lips were bleeding. But he kept on running and that gave me the power to continue as well. I admired him and his strength.
We couldn't hear the melody of the forest in this part of the woods. Here everything seemed to be dead. The light couldn't come trough the thick roof of leaves so we wandered in darkness. The only sound that we could hear was the sound of our lungs gasping for breath and the branches snapping underneath the spiders' legs. And the whispering, oh that horrible sound! It seemed to hypnotize anyone who listened to it so I tried to focus on mine and Legolas's breathing instead of the horrifying melody that had replaced the peaceful symphony of the forest.
In the eternal darkness of this part of the forest, we ran and ran. We had strayed from the path and now we wandered through countless little ways, trying to keep distance between us and the spiders. We didn't know where we were going and in the darkness we couldn't check if we were going in circles. We didn't know where we were going, the only thing we knew and cared about was that if we stopped running, we would end up dead. But at last, like a very small star in a dark winter night there was one little light ahead of us.
'There,' I said and pointed at the light, 'let's go there!'. Knowing that the spiders didn't like light, we made our way to the only light we could see and saw it becoming brighter and bigger as we neared it. It was the end of the forest! Filled with new hope, we fled as fast as we could and jumped the last steps. We flew through the air and landed on green grass. The sun gave us plenty of light and the spiders screamed in terror. They fled back into their homes where the darkness was king but here the light prevailed. And here we were safe.
I opened my eyes. 'With utter truth I can tell you that I had never been so glad to see the sun in my entire life.' I said and smiled at Legolas. I was relieved that we had outwitted the spiders and escaped the darkness. But when I looked at the Elf who lied next to me, I could see that the darkness of the forest still had not left his eyes. He looked back at me with pain written all over his face. 'Are you alright?' I asked him. 'My leg, it hurts.' He spoke to me with difficulty. I rose but the sudden pain in my back made me trip. With effort I regained my balance and made my way to Legolas. I kneeled down and watched his leg. It looked horrible. Red and black blood had mixed into a sickening colour that covered his entire knee. Water, I needed water to clean this wound.
I grabbed the little flask that I always had hidden underneath my clothes and checked if it was still filled with water. The sound of moving liquid was like music to me as I shook the flask. Great. I opened the flask and warned Legolas that it might sting a bit. Then I poured some liquid over the wound. Legolas screamed in pain. The sound of him screaming seemed to pierce through my soul my I felt a mix of sorrow and pity inside me. I caressed Legolas's white locks and whispered sweet words. Some locks were kept stuck on his face because of the black blood that covered it.
