We're at the hospital. The people there are yelling all sorts of stuff. There's a nurse escorting us away from Nelson.
"Hey, please. No. I can't loose him. Please. Please you have save him!" Kacey is screaming at her.
"Kacey. Calm down," I say, "Everything will be alright."
I then take her by the hand to the waiting room.
There's a boy there that looks about Nelson's age. He's shaking nervously.
"Hey, Dan," Kacey explains, "What are you doing here?"
"I heard about Nelson," he says, "It's brutal what people can do with a scrap piece of metal."
"Wait what?" Kacey exclaims.
"Yeah, that's what the kid used. It's all over YouTube," he says.
"Oh my god. Why are people so cruel?" I ask rhetorically.
"I don't know. I don't even know who beat him up. But it looked pretty brutal from what I saw on the video," he states.
I take another look around the waiting room. I spot the girl that was telling the other boy to stop. She has a sling on one arm and an ice pack in the other on her head. I get up and sit next to her.
"I wish I could've done something," she mumbles.
"Listen, you did do something. You stood up to whoever that was," I state, "Most people just stood there."
"I just hate that Brian chose Nelson. I mean he's already been through hell and back. He's a survivor. He almost died in the last surgery for his back," she says.
"Yep. From what I hear Nelson is very much a survivor," I say. I then get up and walk back over to Kacey and Dan to sit down.
"Kacey?" I ask.
"Yeah?" She replies.
"How did Nelson become paralyzed?" I ask.
"He was in a car accident when he was 16. It's been 5 years since. He had to go through 8 surgeries to try to fix his back. 8 whole surgeries and he was still unable to feel anything below his waist," she says, "What hurts a lot is that it's his birthday today and this is what he gets. He doesn't deserve this. Why did Brian have to pick on him. Why?"
A tear drips down her face. I hold her in my arms. Her head on my shoulder.
"Hey. He's going to be okay," I say and then kiss the top of her head.
"I hope you're right," she mumbles softly through tears.
"I do too," I say.
*****
Its been 4 hours and nobody has come to ask about letting us see him. Kacey has been standing at the desk for the last hour asking to see him.
"Kacey Brooks?" A nurse calls. She walks over the nurse, I follow. "Nelson is stable for now, you may see him," the nurse says. She then starts leading us to a room.
Kacey walks in first. I walk in after. He's in pretty bad shape. A busted knee and a broken wrist is just the start. Poor Nelson. They have him on an IV and have a breathing tube that is on his face. His eyes are shut. He probably doesn't even know we're here.
"Hey," Kacey says with her voice cracking from her trying to hold back the tears. She holds his hand, the one that's only bruised and cut. Part of it is wrapped up.
"Hey," he says weakly.
"Oh my god," she exclaims, "Nelson!"
"I'm okay," he says.
