Eighteen

It's been two hours since Nathaniel and Cameron arrived. They're both doing okay. Kacey is still bothering the person at the desk about Nelson. At least I think it's about Nelson.

Ugh. Oh my god. Today has been a mess.

"Shauna King?" I hear a nurse call. I walk over to her.

"You may see Cameron now," he says and starts walking down the hall. I follow him. He opens the door for me. I walk in.

Cameron is laying there with restraints on his arms. He's got an IV in one arm a bandage on the other. He's also got a bandage near the hairline on his head.

"Oh my god Cameron," I say and rush over to him.

"Not so loud," he says and looks over at Nathaniel who is sleeping. Whoa breakthrough. He has insomnia so he has to use medication a lot of times to sleep.

"Cameron what happened?" I whisper.

"I... I have no idea. I really don't know what happened. All I remember is Nate being there and me hitting my head on the counter," he explains.

"Cameron," I sigh.

"I-I-I can't remember. I need to remember. I need to know. I need to know if-if," he starts with tears forming in his eyes. His heart rate is rising.

"You need to know what?" I ask, "Cameron he's okay. Just calm down."

"Shauna I need to know if I hurt him," he says.

"Cameron, I'm fine," I hear Nathaniel say. Well I guess that woke him up.

"Nate I need to know if I hurt you. I am capable of responsibility," Cameron says.

"Fine, you want to know Cameron? You did nothing wrong. You can't control it and that's okay. If you want me to tell you you hurt me. I will. But I won't let you take responsibility for something you didn't do," Nathaniel explains.

"So... I don't get it... We're good?" Cameron says.

"Yes. We're good," Nathaniel says, "I've just got a major headache."

"You passed out," I say to him.

"Yeah, I did but I'm fine now," he says. "Cam remember that I still love you even if shit like this happens once in a while."

"Nate. I have a girlfriend," Cameron says.

"I know. I love you as a friend, Cameron," Nathaniel says and walks out.

"I wish it was more than that," Cameron mumbles.

"Cameron. You know he has a girlfriend right?" I say.

"Yes. I know. I-I-I just wish we had something real," Cameron states.

"Cameron you should get some rest. I check on you in a bit and see when you can be discharged," I say.

"Okay," he says.

I walk outside to find Nathaniel standing there. Oh shit. Did he hear all that. I close the door.

"So he does this because he's still in love?" Nathaniel says.

"Nathaniel-" I start.

"It's fine. I've learned to deal with it. He's been my best friend since. Well as long as I can remember," he says.

I notice that his arm is in a sling and the cut on his face has little pieces of tape to keep it together. Maybe there's no need for stitches.

"So was it really just a sprain?" I ask as we walk down the hall.

"No. It's broken. But it was a clean break. So they might just splint it. Thinking it will heal better," he says. "Oh and my elbow was hyperextended."

"Hey Nathaniel, does it hurt?" I ask.

"No. I can't feel it," he says. "I'm on a lot of pain medication right now."

"Wait why?" I ask.

"I was temporarily paralyzed from nerve damage in my shoulder. But they fixed it and said I should get feeling back within the hour," he states. "So they really doped me up."

"Holy shit. I just remembered," I say, "I'm so sorry for calling you that."

"Don't worry. People make that mistake all the time," he says.

He doesn't like being called by his full name. He doesn't like it because it reminds him of his mom. It also reminds him of his dad when he's mad.

"Nate I am so sorry. I mean I call everyone by their full name," I say.

"Stop apologizing. It's okay," he says.

"Hey, Nate?" I say.

"Yeah Shauna?" He replies.

"Thank you," I say and hug him, "Thank you for being there for Cameron."

"Hey, like I said. I love him as a friend," he says hugging back. Then we let go.

"Alright Shauna. I'd love to stay and chat more but I gotta call Justine. Tell her what happened," he states.

"I thought you didn't like her?" I say.

"I don't but at least I don't get a blame," he states.

"Okay, you have fun with that. I'm going to go check on Kacey," I say.

"Bye, Shauna," he says.

"Bye, Nate," I say walking back to the waiting room.

"Nelson is out of surgery," Kacey says when I sit down next to her, "who was that kid?"

"That was Cameron's friend. Ya know. Nate? The one that has definitely spent more than half his life in hospitals?" I explain.

"Ohhh, that kid," she says, "If I dated guys I would so date him. Too bad he's gay."

"What?" I say, "He has a fucking girlfriend."

"I know," she says.

"So why'd you just say he was gay?" I ask.

"You can see it in his eyes. He doesn't fall for most girls," she says.

"Well. He's bisexual," I say.

"How do you know that?" She says putting emphasis on the you.

"He dated Cameron," I say, "and Cameron sure does miss it."

"Oh," she says surprised, "Do you want to come with me to see Nelson?"

"Sure," I say.

"There was something wrong with his heart. That's what he had to have surgery on. So don't be freaked out okay?" She says trying to comfort me. Probably comforting herself more than me.

"Okay," I say.
