Thousands of years ago, there was a creature that lived all alone in a deserted part of the world. One day the wind carried the scent of a new creature approaching from far off.
A shadow emerged from the light, far, far away. It slowly came closer. The creature sniffed, and smiled. "A human! I haven't seen a human in years!"
As the human approached, he was more visible.
(No, that is not Link.) He threw his bag on the ground, and sat on a rock in front of the creature. "Please allow me to rest here. I will only stay for a short while."
The creature stared at the human, as the human calmly stared back. "I haven't seen a human for some time... why have you come? Don't tell me, let me guess. I bet you came to steal my armor, in hopes of getting a wish granted. You believe that ridiculous legend."
The human glanced at the creatures armor. "What legend? I'm just a traveler."
The creature squinted. "Hmph. Don't lie to me." The human rested back. "I'm not lying. Tell me."
The human relaxed, as the creature grunted. "Anyone who wears my armor will be granted with incredible power. Humans make up such ridiculous stories."
The human looked off into the distance. "Humans?"
The creature looked where the human was looking. "Many humans have come. Swordsmen, adventurers... military men looking for glory... men, women... sometimes people seeking friendship..."
The human looked back at the monster. "There's no one here." The creature inched closer, showing his teeth. "I ate them all. They we're all so greedy. They wanted to kill me, so I ate them, one after the other."
The human rested his hand in his head. "That's a scary story. I'm shaking."
The creature laughed. "Ha ha ha! Tell me your fondest wish! I will grant it."
The human scratched his neck. "I don't want anything." The creature went into shock. "Huh? Nothing?! Then why do you wear such thick armor beneath your cloak? I can see it. You are a warrior. If you have no wishes, then why has you come here?"
The human set his hand down. "Well, I heard that there was a terrible man-eating monster here. I was asked to get rid of it. No, that's a lie. In truth, I was drawn here by the strange air in this land. You can't say it's moving... or that it's still. But it seems filled with energy. It's a weird place."
The monster licked his lips. "How can you sense that? How wise you are."
The human stood up. "And here I find a monster who admits to eating men. How long have you been living alone? You can't die, but you can't really live."
The monster thought. "Ignored by all the universe in this strange, still air for time unknown. For thousands of years. For tens of thousands of years. Forever?"
The human blinked. "That's sounds so... sad."
The monster stomped forward. "How DARE you pity me? I am a fearsome, evil man-eater!" The human wasn't frightened. "There isn't anyone left to eat."
The creature looked off in the distance for a few moments, then looked back at the human. "Traveler... why can't I leave this place? Bound by space, bound by time, for thousands of years... huh? It's strange, but I never noticed before. I wonder why."
The creature fidgeted around. "I'm... tired of being alone. I want to sleep soon... I want... ohhh, the hopes and dreams of the countless people I've eaten... ...they... ...they're whirling around my mind! Is this what "hope" feels like? Make... make time flow for me! Make time..."
The human reached inside his bag, pulling out a drum. He tapped it with his hand. "Rhythm. Dance! This place is the only stage you've got!" The human continued to tap the drum, as the creature began to move.
He danced. The air moves in small vibrations. Time is born.
He danced for three days and three nights. On the fourth morning he fell down and died... and so did his world. The only thing left... was his armor.
The human stood in front of the creatures armor. "You made time move." He removed his feather from his head, revealing it as a knife. He cut part of the armor off.
For several hours, the human worked. He carved, and painted the armor into what would seem to be used as a mask.
"Your power is safe inside this mask. Now no one will feel threatened by it. May you sleep in peace, for all time...
Majora."
