Healing Takes Time

When I wake up this morning, I know that today isn't going to be like it has been the past few weeks, and my suspicions are confirmed when I see Libby, Alex, and Moira walking through the hospital's hallways. The three stop outside of my door and speak with the doctor that is taking care of both myself and Charles.

Alex looks through my window and sees me watching him and the others. We lock eyes for a few minutes before the doctor places his hand on Alex's shoulder to gain his attention again, he nods at the man and gives me a quick last glance before walking away.

My heart thumps against my chest and my mouth suddenly becomes dry. It may not seem like it, but that is the most contact that I have had with any other man other than the doctors, nurses, and my brother ever since we had the battle in Cuba.

The door to my room swings open revealing Moira and Libby who are both wearing anxious smiles.

"Hey V, how are you feeling today?" Libby asks coming over to sit beside me on the bed.

"Alright, I think..."

"Good, good." She nods before falling quiet again.

That's strange, she's never quiet... I look between her and Moira a couple of times, the last time that I do I notice that Moira has a large bag in her hand. It was my newest bag, I noticed, the one that I got when I forced the boys into going shopping with me. I glance up at Moira to see that she refuses to look at me.

I wonder why...

"Moira... Why do you have one of my bags?" I ask quietly.

She looks at Libby briefly before answering me.

"I just thought that you might like to change into some actual clothes instead of wearing a hospital gown all the time." She brings the bag towards me and puts it down beside me while unzipping it at the same time.

"Thank you." I whisper inspecting the bag thankfully.

It's just what I thought that it would be though. Filled with clothes and other essentials from my closet...

"Alex and I went through your closet trying to find things that we thought you would be most comfortable in." Libby replies quickly before my thoughts could go farther in anger with others being in my closet.

"Perfect, that's great thank you." The small smile that Moira had been fighting to hold onto for my sake falls, and I instantly feel bad for what I said.

"She doesn't mean it rudely Moira. She was probably just nervous about you being in her closet, there's some things that are private to her in there. Stuff that she won't allow anyone to see." Libby explains the words that I apparently couldn't get out of my mouth.

"Oh no, that's alright. I would never go through anything in your room without permission a head of time. Even then I thought that if I let Libby and Alex do it, instead of me, then they know you better than I do so they would know what you actually need instead of me just guessing."

"Thank you, Moira, I appreciate that." I tell her honestly and giving her the sincerest look that I was physically able too.

She has done so much for me in the last little while, I figured that I owed her a smile and some sort of gratitude in the very least towards her. I ignore my aching muscles in the process, like I said it was the very least that I owed her.

"Knock knock." The three of us women turn towards the door again only to see my doctor with a large tray of food in his hands.

This man has gone above and beyond while working with me. He has the patience of a saint, and the love of a parent with their child. My doctor has stuck with me through thick and thin throughout my healing process, and whenever he got off work, or is supposed to be on break or having his day off, he always comes to visit me.
