The air around us was still and quiet.

I felt her eyes study me as I settled on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," so I looked backed at her too.

We have these staring contests from time to time, seeing who would smile or laugh first.

But we both knew that it was more than that.

It's like a way for us to know what's going on in each other's mind.

Sometimes, I would see tears glazed over her warm brown eyes, and she would look away quickly, not wanting to see the pain in her eyes.

Sometimes she would talk about it, sometimes she won't.

They were mostly about her mum, her sister, her dad, worries, fears, or life in general.

Her mum had passed away a few years ago.

Her sister, Nessa, was there when it happened.

Nessa moved to Australia a year after their loss, and has been living with their aunt ever since.

That's all she's ever told me.

I guess she feels lost, frustrated, and sad.

This time, her eyes were a bit puffy.

Like always, they were rimmed with dark circles.

She looked away and sat up, wrapping herself tighter in the blanket.

She pulled her knees close to her chest, gently resting her chin on top.

"Shouldn't you be sleeping?" she asked softly.

"Yeah..."

She gives me a small nudge on the shoulders, "Then go sleep."

"I don't feel like it," I answered.

Truthfully, I just wanted to stay up and talk to her.

We sat quietly for a while before I realized that I forgot to tell her the most obvious thing that happened.

"Oh yeah... Michael drew on your face," I smiled.

She rolled her eyes and picked up her phone from nearby, "Again?!"

"At least he can practice his drawing skills," I laughed.

She gave me another playful shove and tapped on the camera app.

A few seconds later, she was laughing at the sharpie drawings.

"He even drew a lightning bolt!" she pointed at the top of her forehead and smiled.

I lowered my voice and made a serious face,"Yer a wizard Danny."

She laughed and traced her finger along the lightning both.

She took a few selfies of Michael's masterpiece before setting her phone down with a smile.

"I think Michael secretly wants to be a makeup artist," she chuckled.

Our eyes met and she gives me a small smile.

I don't know why, but when we catch each other's eyes across the room, on stage, or anywhere else, I couldn't help but smile.

Her smile's just... contagious.

I reach over and tug the corner of the blanket to cover my shoulders.

"Sharing is caring," I stated.

"Calummmm," she whined.

She tried to pull it back around her, but I already had a death grip on the blanket.

"Fine," she mumbled.

She gave me a playful shove and hugged a pillow to her chest.

We both watched Jimmy Fallon for a few minutes before I felt the guilt settle in.

I grabbed the side of the blanket and draped it around her side, warming the both of us underneath.

She gave me a sly grin, "I knew you'd give in."

I suddenly became more aware of how close we were sitting.

Her arm was warm against mine.

I could smell the faint smell of her apple shampoo.

As I reached down for an itch on my leg, my hand brushed hers.

Our eyes met as she flinched away.
