Between text messages about insomnia, rants about feminism, and arguments about who the best American author is
Between shoving each other around playfully and pockets hiding tiny notes with a simple "hello"
While hiding my crooked teeth and you showing me how one dimple was an abyss while the other was barely a dip
While biting my tongue and you pestering me until I spoke unedited
In the cupboard of your heart
I reached for a glass cup and discovered a chalice
I took it and considered the game done but as I lifted my trophy to the air I felt it shove itself into my throat
I spoke to you with a tightened throat ever since
(Your smile became too big and you'd blush at the smallest moments and I knew -
I knew the chalice was your heart
And I knew that I wanted it more than I could ever say)
