CHAPTER TWO.
'you never break a promise'

-

mike walked through the school's crowded hallways. he stopped at his locker and opened it, shuffling in some papers his history teacher gave him.

he stopped for a second, looking at the pictures of him and the boys when they were kids that were up on the metallic door. he softly smiled. they were really small, and it only seemed yersterday when the pics were taken.

he suddenly felt something on his shoulder, interrupting his gaze. the feeling travelled to his neck and to his cheek.

what the fuck.

he quickly turned around.

nothing.

maybe he just imagined or thought that he felt something. yeah, that's probably it. he shook his head and brushed it off.

but the feeling came back.

"mike" he heard softly.

mike's eyes widened.

he recognized that voice.

it was-

"hey dude! wasup?" dusting punched his shoulder.

mike jumped and looked at him, eyebrows furrowed.

"hey, is everything okay?" dustin asked.

"yeah" he nodded, still thinking about the previous events.

lucas and max approached them, hands locked.

"hey"

"hi"

mike sometimes envied lucas and max. maybe if el was alive, they could be like them. they could hold hands. maybe even skip some classes to be together or sneak out to share some kisses.

but they couldn't.

overall, he was extremely happy for lucas. his best friend found love.

"hey, how about we go back to campaigns, or to the arcade? like we used too" dustin said.

"yeah man, it'll be good for you" lucas said.

mike would say no. but he remembered what he promised nancy.

and you never break a promise.

mike bit his lip and looked up, nodding.

"yeah, the arcade sounds fun" he forced a smile.

he didn't want them to see how the tent was still up in his basement, they would say he should take it down or else he wouldn't be able to move on.

but it's the only thing he had from her.

dustin, lucas and max's faces lit up. they didn't expect for him to agree.

mike looked around and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.

"where's will?" he asked.

dustin shrugged and took a bite of a biscuit that no one had seen he had.

"dunno. he missed school today"

mike looked up at him.

"wait, he missed school? why?"

"we don't know" lucas said.

max saw how mike was in a deep thought.

"why?" she asked.

mike snapped his head and looked at her.

he inhaled.

"oh, nothing. i gotta go to class. um, i'll- i'll see you guys later. bye."

mike's head started building up everything.

will had been acting distant for a few weeks.

he misses school, doesn't tell the boys. and they always tell each other when they're sick or have to miss school.

and what he felt. and heard.

it couldn't be her though.

she was gone.

right?
